OK, I know this one and it may sound a little gross at first but it really works and is very gentle. I took my 11 year old to a GP who gave us this remedy that really works.

Rub Olive Oil on your scalp and leave it on for 20 minutes. Then shampoo it out with regular Dawn dish soap as this is a oil and regular shampoo will not remove it and then shampoo and condition as you normally would. Be sure to have a seperate small tooth comb to run over the scalp to help remove the gunk from the scalp so when you wash it, it will come right out.

Do this 2-3 times per week until you get the dandruff under control then switch to once every week then once every few weeks.

Dawn is so gentle that they use it on wildlife and using the Olive Oil will also help with split ends for women and help release the so called "Cradle Crap" that's under your hair lying on your scalp. Hope this helps but if you try it, it WILL work.

You can buy head and shoulders I suppose. Sometimes people have more dandruff during the winter months, so by spring is should clear up. Or make sure you wash shampoo and product out of your hair good.

Some gels make dandruff worse as well as hairspray.

Weather you use a dandruff shampoo, like Selsun Blue
or regular shampoo, rinse your hair after washing with one
cup of vinegar to restore the ph balance. Do Not rinse
out the vinegar. When hair is dry, scent vanishes.
This is a good time to wash all combs & brushes.
Vinegar will also, make hair shine, shine, shine!
Clean and healthy again!

The best shampoo that worked for me was T-Gel by Neutrogena. Use it three times a week and you will see results in 2 weeks. It worked wonders for me, got rid of the dandruff and now I use it once a week as preventive care. Try it , it really works!!!

What Is Dandruff?

First you should know that a person's entire body surface continuously sheds dead skin cells. The skin itself sheds every twenty-four days. Dandruff is the result of the normal growing process of the skin cells of the scalp. Shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp at an excessive rate, is the result of the normal growing process of the skin cells of the scalp.

In a normal scalp, the process of sloughing off old cells and manufacturing of their replacements is very orderly and complete. In the dandruff scalp, there is mass disorder and often the departing cells are not dead before leaving the scalp.

There appear to be two different causes of dandruff -- internal and external:

Internal Causes
External Causes

hormonal imbalance
poor health

poor hygiene

allergic hypersensitive

lack of rest

emotional stress

excessive consumption of sugar, fat, starch

improper nutrition

heredity predisposition
excessive use of hair sprays and gels
improper use of hair-coloring products or excessive use of hot hair curlers or curling irons

cold weather and dry indoor heating

stress and anxiety.

infrequent shampooing of the hair or inadequate rinsing of the scalp and hair.

Dry Or Greasy Dandruff?
Dandruff can cause either an overly dry scalp with itchy white flakes that may be waxy or greasy or dandruff can manifest as an oily greasy scalp with scales.

Dandruff & The Fungus Theory
Contrary to popular theory, although bacteria may aggravate a dandruff condition, bacteria do not cause the initial problem. Most medical authorities consider dandruff, even the mildest forms, to be a type of scalp or skin related disease. Clinically, one description of dandruff is seborrhea capitos or excessive sebum production of the scalp. Today most skin specialists agree that dandruff is associated with a tiny fungus called Pityrosporum ovale, or P. ovale for short. This fungus lives on our bodies and scalp all the time, usually without causing a problem. Unfortunately, for some people, it can get out of control... leading to dandruff.

Additional Causes Of Dandruff
Dandruff is usually seasonal. It is most severe during the winter and mildest during the summer. Dandruff scales usually occur as small, round, white-to-gray patches on top of the head. Scaling can occur anywhere on the scalp, in the hair, on the eyebrows, the beard and can spread to the neck and shoulders. Dandruff is often known as "dry scalp", but people with oily scalps tend to suffer the most. An oily scalp also supports the growth of P. ovale. Since dandruff is a natural process, it can not be eliminated. It can only be managed and controlled.

Ever heard of the HEAD AND SHOULDERS shampoo? If your dandruff is to the extreme use the dark blue one almost every day. The shampoo inside of it is orange. If it isn't that bad, then just use the regular blue and white kind. If you still have trouble see a dermatoligist-could mean that you have fungus bacteria growing on your scalp.

wash your hair in warm or room temp water with dandruff shampoo. I just read recently that washing your hair in hot water removes nutrients and fries the scalp.
