Essentially, you sleep in cycles, when you don't get enough sleep, you wake up in the wrong cycle and aren't mentally prepared to perform at full capacity. If you sleep to long, then you start cycling through again, and wake up in the wrong cycle. A complete cycle usually takes between 7.5 and 8.5 hours. If you consistantly get about 8 hours of sleep every night, then you will find yourself way more alert during the day and more "on top of things", it is also better for your health.
