I haven't worn footwear in ten years, and I do not intend to ever wear footwear again. It's not embarrassing, nor is it illegal. People, this is Yahoo answers, not Yahoo guesses. If you personally don't like bare feet, that is your right, but PLEASE do not spread myths that it is illegal!

Going barefoot in public is not against any laws in the US, is not gross, is not dangerous (certainly not more so than high heels or platforms). In spite of persistent myths there are no health laws requiring footwear in stores or restaurants, there are no laws requiring footwear while driving, there are no insurance companies requiring or even recommending footwear for customers. If you're a habitual barefooter callouses are tough enough to handle glass and thorns. You aren't at high risk of parasites or disease from going barefoot; the hookworm has been pretty much eradicated from the South since modern plumbing and never was a problem in cooler climates, skin is made to keep pretty much all other nasties out, and we're at far greater risk picking something up and transferring it to our face/mouth/food with our hands than with our feet even in restrooms! Only in the US do so many people believe it's unhealthy or dangerous; here in Europe even though most people still don't go barefoot for fashion reasons, most people do believe it's a very healthy thing. I've never seen a 'shoes required' sign except in hardhat areas on this side of the ocean, and negative comments (apart when pertaining to fashion) are rare and usually come from groups of teens who tend to make fun of anything that's unusual.

I am never embarrassed by going barefoot in a grocery store. Why should I be? For you anti-barefoot folks, don't give me the old "No one wants to see that." After all, you see flip-floppers' feet too. Also, there are no Health Dept. regulations demanding customers wear shoes. I and hundreds of others have researched this and debunked the myth. See http://www.barefooters.org
for more info.
Barefooting is in no way illegal, immoral, or unhealthy. I let shoe wearers wear their shoes without insult, and expect that I should be treated with the same respect for my choice to live barefoot. Let me tell you, in fact about 95% of ALL places I go to have NO problems with my bare feet.

The poster below me is wrong. I live in Kingsville, Texas, and have lived in Denton (near Dallas) as well as Houston. The 95% figure is my best estimation. I almost NEVER get problems while going barefoot in stores/restaurants, etc. Even some museums allow me in barefoot.

very own accountability and usual danger--even without indications of a no bare ft coverage. bare ft are extra services to slipping on moist food market flooring, and would additionally get cut back if there is glass that's no longer on the instant seen and this is stepped on. in actuality, I as quickly as entered a food market that had a turnstile. A toe hits the turnstile pole as I enter the shop (ow!) yet i did no longer experience any lasting soreness. Bu, I had to leave the shop quickly sufficient--I had cracked a toenail in 0.5 alongside the whole toenail, and it become commencing as much as bleed extra effective than purely a small volume. My fault, for entering into barefoot, using fact even the front of a turn flop might have hit the turnstile pole in the past the feet.

It would be embarassing to have a store employee tell you to leave if you got caught.

Actually, here near the beach it is not uncommon for people to go around barefoot.

Uh, no.. why would it be? We do it all the time, it's not really even an issue. Shopping, the mall, grocery store, auto parts... it's all good! Though the park and river beaches or the deep dark forest are even better. Shoes suck, are foreign to the natural human condition. Why wear them? Because other ppl THINK you should? Screw that!

I personally would not be embarrassed to go into a store without shoes on.

If it is not allowed by the establishment and were asked to leave then yes I'd be embarrassed.

But, if I didn't have shoes and I knew it was allowed I really wouldn't care what people think of me, therefore I wouldn't be embarrassed.
