My family has a miniparty whenever it's one of my dog's birthdays, they're part of the family. We sing "Happy Birthday" and then each dog gets a doggy ice-cream, we do the same for each person in my family's birthday (give the dogs a doggie ice-cream); this lets the dogs know to expect something special. They actually sit by the fridge waiting for a treat when it's someone's birthday.

Birthday parties for dogs is really a bad idea.
The dog has no idea what is going on, and is quite a waste.
Just give him/her a small, nice gift, and that'll be good.

well, this is my opinion:
don't give it a party, but just play the whole day with it, spoil it, and just have fun. parties just get them worked up. keep a lot of bones and treats around. party streamers are bad, and no chocolate, potatoes, grapes, peanuts, or onions.
