While going down the road in my 740 Turbo today in 5th gear, it suddenly came out of 5th and went into 4th on its own, yet the "5" light on the dash remained lit. If I engage or disengage 5th gear with the shift button, the light will turn on or off, but the gear never engages.
Any suggestions?

Check the solenoid or the relay.

check the wires going to the solinoid on the left side of the overdrive housing [the power wire often brakes right at the terminal ] if this is ok listen for the click of this solinoid when you hit the shifter button [key on engine off] if no click and you have power and ground replace the solinoid if no power suspect the relay note if solinoid clicks and o/d does not function suspect an internal fault in the overdrive unit.

this can be a few things.first check the power going to the shift solenoid,if so you have a bad solenoid,if no power replace relay
it is located in the relay panel behind ash tray assm
part # 3523804 . you can put your and on it as you shift and feel the click ...I have done plenty of both....

there are 2 wires that run to the trans to ingage the 5th gear. mine broke and i had no o/d. find the wires cheak them an look @ the fuse should say 5th gear / o/d cheak to c itzgood
