Why don't you focus on enriching your own minds? Do you think that hate filled reproach will make anyone see the light?I notice that many of you claim to have read the Bible, but still say so many bad things about it. I've studied it in depth, and most of what appears to be hypocritical, can be explained by further examination. You make us appear as people who hate and despise what others call holy. Show what we can do by trying to advance humanity, you accomplish nothing bashing Christians

I enrich my mind on a daily basis; you are certainly in no position to judge the content of my brain.

We do not make Christians appear as *anything* at all, they are what they are. Some are nice people who represent their faith in a manner that I'm certain Jesus would have been proud of. Others are judgmental, self-righteous scum, who can barely string two coherent thoughts together in their own defense.

And as far as trying to advance humanity is concerned, again -- you have no clue what I or any other atheist here is doing to make the world a better place. But I know that Christians are trying to stop stem-cell research that would save lives, and block the teaching of sex-education that would prevent the spread of disease and unwanted pregnancy. That doesn't seem like advancing humanity at all.

Should you care to check my answers, you'll find I'm not big on hate-filled reproach, and that I have more than once criticised that aspect of Dawkin's "The God Delusion".

As for the bible, I know it well and I'm still with Mark Twain: "It ain't those parts of the Bible that I can't understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand."

Your argument on respect for the "holy" is, I'm afraid, flawed. Consider the implications and consequences if an individual or group could declare any belief or practice beyond criticism simply by declaring it "holy".
No attacks and disrespect just for the sake of it, certainly, but no immunity either.

(If you insist on the principle, would you like to come round on Saturday?
I'm sacrificing my first-born to Moloch.)

ok...... no doubt many Christians are hypocrites but many others are peaceful people who just want to help the unsaved. there are also others that confuse trying to save someone with being cruel and hateful like the spanish inquistadors. i am not God but im sure that these people did not and will not get into heaven with that attitude. i can tell that you are probably an atheist. God loves you and that's why he gave up his son's life for you. he gave us a second chance please don't lose that chance. i advise you to go to the Church of the Living God Hyattsville,Md. the people there can help!

I agree with you. There's a difference between educating and belittling. But understand the frustration some people feel.

Someone claims the earth is flat. You explain, "No, its round"

They say, "But this map says its flat!"

You say, "The map was drawn by a man...it is inaccurate. The earth is round"

They say, "The map is accurate! It says so!"

You show photos of the earth, you share geological facts, you offer them a globe...but they ignore the photos, assume the facts are false, and accuse the globe of being created by evil.

You'd get frustrated at a certain point, abandon politeness and say, "Listen! Why are you so dense!?!?! THE EARTH IS ROUND"

This is the point that many rude people in this room are at.

Many of us do not bash Christianity, and only point out things that are objectionable in the Bible if you use it as an infallible moral compass. Consider that those you target for criticism are only looking for a reaction, not trying to assert an intellectual superiority.

I don't walk around bashing christians. I don't even give my opinion unless someone asks because people like you think because I'm an athiest I'm some horrible creature with no morals or ethics. That's quite a rude assumption.

I don't think that most of us are here to do much of anything but have some fun and maybe a little debate. We advance humanity in our real lives and come here to play around. Chill out when have you seen anybody launch and anti-Christianity campaign in the media, lighten up, its just a Yahoo site.

I've got four college degrees, and a pretty enriched mind already, thank you.

"Hate-filled approach" doesn't describe the atheists here very well.

Take the area of a Missionary. Or spoons. EDIT - my sympathy is going out to all the christians who concept this became actual. they might desire to nicely known that atheists very, very, infrequently convert to Christianity. whilst it happens it rather is massive information...

"most of what appears to be hypocritical, can be explained by further examination"-generally this involves the use of newly "discovered" metaphors and/or Satan.
