Is there a legitimate medical reason or is it just more of an etiquette thing?

Everyone has their own prefrence. Most drink at night because it's the end of the day and can sleep it off I would guess. Myself I can crack open beers as soon as I wake up and go all day. But for most I would say it's a latter part of the day thing.

That's a British drinking etiquette. Whenever you
want to, just don't drink and drive, and be careful
when you are playing with the dog!

After 5PM is the perfect cop out time for functional alcoholics in denial. Weekends too!

I think it's because we're supposed to be at work until then.

It truly is etiquette only. Any medical issue would be with drinking in the first place...your body doesn't really know what time it is.

Depends what time you get out of work, usually 3-5pm.

ummm ... i go to U of I, and for unofficial (st.patricks) i woke up at 6:30 AM and started drinking as well as throughout the day, along with the rest of the campus.

we shouldn't! that's a crazy etiquette thing.

a glass of wine for breakfast sounds good to me, in a not promoting alcohol dependency kind of way

NO, you don't have to wait to drink till 5 pm if you are at home i say you can drink when ever you feel like it. so drink up and have fun! :)
