I would like to purchase an inexpensive surprise for a male co-worker who has befriended me... I had thought of just picking him up a gourmet candybar and leaving it on his desk but learned he's a strict follower of Lo-Carb eating. Any suggestions on what I can give him?

a steak left on a desk might not be too appetizing.

How about a container of fancy nuts. They are allowed on the low carb diet. Do you have a Harry and David? If so, they probably would have something.

You can also get Low Carb bars at GNC and I am sure tons of other places.
