I wouldn't per say "introduce myself" I would acknowledge their presences with a nod. I would take clues from their behavior to see if they welcomed further conversation.
You never know why that person may be flying... So I would not push a conversation if IE :
* The person has headphones on.
* Is attempting to read a book/ magazine.
* Has a pillow/blanket and looks like they may want to nap.
* Huffs when you sit down next to them.
I would also wait till they offered a opening into a conversation.
If you do end up in a conversation... ask Lot's of questions. Most people love to talk about their lives.
If you don't use your flight time to relax and mentally prepare for your trip ahead. Good Luck

If they make eye contact with you, yes, you should introduce yourself. You will be able to tell by someone's body language if they are open to you or not. I find about 50% of the time those on airplanes next to you introduce themselves, or at least engage in some type of pleasant conversation. I think it's the polite thing to do.

You dont ignore them but you dont need to strike a conversation up with them. Some people like to be left alone and others are dangerous strangers. Just say hi and if they start talking then they want to talk. Otherwise shut up after the "hello"

I would if they had an open looking personality. Some of those crazy old stingy ladies or something maybe I'd pass. Once I talked with some guy about traveling all over the world for his business. It was pretty cool, and it was interesting.

Yes. You are going to be sitting next to them for awhile and maybe it might help you feel a little secure about who is sitting next to you. It will give you a heads up on whether they are friendly or not which could be useful information in any situation that may occur.

Pretend they don't exist, far tas much as possible, put a piece of string dangling from the side of your mouth. Hopefully they will ask to get moved to first class and you'll get both elbows on the armrests, result.

I usually just say hi, and comment on how long the trip will be.
Then I get my headphones and doze off into my little world filled with mermaids that fall in love with humans.

I think the polite thing to do is at least say hello, how are you. If you are going to be sitting beside someone for an extended period of time you should be cordial.

I don't introduce myself but I do smile and say hi. You can tell if they want to engage in conversation or not. If they seem talkative then go ahead and have formal introductions.
