I am currently a Special Constable in the UK and have been for 5yrs to which have aquired rank, indepentant officer status, drives police vehicles to incidents, attends jobs, have over fifty arrests and all of the paperwork to go with it. WHY do we have to go through the same process like new applicants? I personally think 'experience' over takes paper sith and four roles plays. In any other employment, when applying for a job asks do you have previous experience. I think the Centrex system which is currently used to recruit officers is false and not what actual police work is.. I have been rejected 3 times, even with help from serving and retired police officers. And YES I still want to join.
The Recruitment Department put the closing date back, twice! because " We are having trouble attracting people " Why don't they start looking at the people that give up their free time with a considerable amount experience who want to join the police

That is the way of her majesteys government and the procedures that are laid down - you are sworn to protect her majesty and her laws- so the rules are rules! dont ***** about it just do it! besides (no disrespect) but a special is not really the same as a regular!!!

I've tried to join the Police and have been turned down three times for different reasons, the first time due to asthma which i got rid of 6 years before hand, but got through on appeal, then got turned down at interview for being too clued up, they thought i was coached on, well what do you expect from a policemans son whose done work experience, then the third time got turned down for not preparing myself enough. I've now just passed all the assessments to become a PCSO and waiting for a start date, but don't see how the role play situations i was put under had any relevance to the job, I'm hoping by doing the PCSO job i can work my way up to becoming a PC. Good luck to you when you try again.

It is unfortunate that after 5 years as a Special Constable you have been rejected for the Regulars. I have known this before but there have been circumstances far back in the past, resurrected and used as the reason for rejection.
I had 22 years in the Specials, but finished some years ago. It is a worthwhile 'pastime', getting more dangerous as the days go by and to those wo knock the volunteer status, the ethic that drove me was the protection of my fellow man from the evil so and so's who invade property, steal, cause mayhem for others and are generally non compliant with this Country's legal framework.

The actual work done by specials in some forces is minimal especially when it comes to paperwork and the entry qualifications into the specials is a lot lower than the regular service.

Because from reading your CV it sounds like you're in the minority. Most specials have nowhere near the experience you have, and to let you in we'd have to let in the idiots as well. Keep trying, the application stage is a load of tosh anyway, write what they want to hear, not the truth and you'll do fine.

discrimination? have you thought about that. Surely with all your experience you would be first in line? aren't they crying out of police officers? I admire all of you who want to take up such a hard demanding and dangerous job. I wish you well. keep on at it and hopefully sooner then later they will take notice of your application . But if you ask me I would employ you as a police officer. Good luck .

I sympathise. My son is a PSCO and wants to join the regulars. He will have to apply and go through the whole process he went through again.

You have been Policing in your free time for nothing for 5 years. I have to ask why a person would do that? Community spirit, doubt it, ulterior motive, possibly, perhaps you have answered your own question as to why they won't have you.
Carry on doing it for nothing, whose the mug?
