G'day,
Just to add to the already terrific answers so far, I have to mention that there's not very much you can earn for 20hrs/week. Therefore it is very important that you do not rely on this work for your living expenses in Australia. Please plan your budget carefully based on the figures given by the answerer before me. The universities websites have also some living cost figures that you may use to calculate your finance.
Ummm... you are going to study English here, how good is your English actually? Based on your question, looks pretty good. The most important thing is to have your English good, since without good English, very hard to find well-paid part-time jobs.
Another thing that you must check is whether or not you can convert your student visa to work visa while in Australia. To find out, you will need to enquire directly to the Australian Embassy/High Comm closest to where you live.
Please do not get take this info wrong. I am not discouraging you to come to Australia. I used to be an International student in Australia as well and I have seen plenty of my fellow international students ran out of fund without finishing their study or getting a job.
Hope this helps. Good luck on your study and welcome to Australia :)

If you truly want to visit and work in Australia, I would not choose Sydney. Sydney is the most expensive city in the country.
Perth is a great city, it's the most isolated city in Australia. Very welcoming and very affordable.
Jobs are very easy to find, but not always easy to get. Unemployment in Australia is very low and there are skill shortages in some areas. Maybe have a look at jobsite like www.seek.com.au and see what's available in your field.
An Australian job can be up to 38 hours per week (Full Time) and part time can be anywhere between 10 and 25 hours a week. Casual jobs are best for young Students as you can say when you would like to work. Casual positions are usually held in Shops and Department Stores.
If you get into a casual position at a shop, you can make anywhere from $80AUD to $350AUD a week (Depends on where, and how long you are working). A Part time position gives you guaranteed hours and wages, depending on hours, you can sometimes earn $400 - 500p/w.
A unit in Sydney could cost up to $350 p/w plus utilities, that's the extreme though.
For other areas you can look at www.realestate.com.au for rental and student share accomodation.

Sydney is probably easiest to get a job, but it's rather expensive to live there
I live in Newcastle, a 2 hour drive from Sydney, and I pay $135 a week rent on a 1 bedroom apartment or reasonable size
my brother works in Sydney and pays around $250 a week in a 2 bedroom
jobs are there for anyone that wants them, you may have to work in a Supermarket or similar for a while, but if you can handle it you'll be fine
I think the minimum wage is $16 an hour in the Sydney Area

Depends what kind of job your looking for. You might get a contract role in your field but in mine (Ag chemistry) all the jobs are in small country towns ... and a small country town in Australia can be pretty boring!
In other areas there's is plenty of work ... always work in retail and tourism related areas as well as barwork, waiting tables, kitchen hand etc.
Rent in Sydney is pretty high ... I pay $260/wk for a two bedroom place ... basic but comfortable but getting a place can be tricky at the moment as there are fewer houses available particularly on the lower rent range. The inner West is pretty decent for rent and has good public transport and millions of restaurants cafes and bars - suburbs like Petersham, Leichhardt and Summer Hill are nice.
We spend around $100 week on groceries (for two), $80 month for electricity, $60 month on phone. A wage aroun $450-500/wk (after tax) is manageable (that's what I earned at uni and I still had enough for fun ... speaking of fun, a glass of wine is generally around $5 in a pub (more in restaurants), a beer is around $4 for Aus beer and a main meal in a decent restaurant is around $20-$25).
Sydney is a wonderful city to live in or to visit ... 27 years and I still love it!
