Hey, I have had several birds in my life, including budgies.
They make excellent pets. But they are only as good as the owner. They need lots of affection. Talk to them alot. spend time with them.
When you buy the bird, have them clip the wings. when you get home, catch the bird and hold him about 8 inches above your bed, so when he flies, he will realize he can not fly. Then pick him up and handle him. Maybe let him sit on your finger or ride on your shoulder. By the time the feathers grow back, he will bond with you and be your best friend. The more time you spend with your bird, the better he will be. Talk to the bird all the time, soon enough, he will talk back. Have fun

I have had parakeets for a very long time (~14 years) and they are not for every one. They need a clean environment and need their cage cleaned every week because they throw the shells of the seeds on the floor and poop a lot.

Mine are quite noisy and drive my boyfriend insane. They get really upset when I leave to class or work. They destroy their toys I buy them and throw their feeders to the floor. They are young and very hyper. They need a lot of attention and love.

Their vet bills are around $40 per visit per bird, $20 for a shot if they need one, and about $10-15 for medicine.

I had some when I was younger, and I really loved them. They can learn to talk and are very cute. However, they can get sick really easily and die from it very quickly without the proper medicine. One of mine did.

One of my budgies escaped and flew away, but miraculously came back a few days later and landed on my brother's head.

If their wings are clipped, they are a lot easier to take care of.

i have had as many as 12 budgies at one time and i love to let them loss in there room. yes they can be messy but they are still fun to play wit. but i like to keep atleast 2 at a time to keep each other company when im gone to work so they dont get lonely. they tend not to pay me attention because they have each other. and if the are making alot of noise i simply cover there cages wit dark towels. but i love to put them outside in a hanging cage to hear them call to the other song bird.
