Go to a shelter. I volunteer at a shelter and they have to euthanize many cats every day while breeders are making a few bucks. These breeders often overbreed the cats as to put tremendous pain and poor health unto the mother. There are far too many good cats at a shelter. In most cases, the cats there have been socialized with humans and are just happy to find a good home. Very rarely do I see a cat that many people would consider undesirable.
Each feral cat costs the community on average about $2000 over its lifetime. This includes healthcare, facilities, and the manpower to care for one cat. Please be part of the solution.

They aren't worth what you pay. You are paying to support an unethical 'puppy mill' type situation that most ethical breeders are barred from selling to. The purebreds are usually VERY low quality bred from cats that should not have been bred. The mixed breeds can be very unhealthy and under cared for.
If you want a purebred kitten, find a good breeder and use them. If you just want a kitten, or a purebred of any age, use http://www.petfinder.com . You can also search for breed rescue groups. Simple google ["cat breed here" rescue group] and start clicking, e-mailing, and calling.

Pet shops do not buy them from you,( which is what I think you are asking), unless you are a registered and known breeder. I hope you weren't planning on trying to sell them to one.
Many shelters will even charge you a fee to place a cat there now a days.

Depending on what breed - they can go anywhere from $50 to $1000. But if you just want a pet - go to the pet shelters and adopt one. They need homes with lots of love.
