The Marine Corp was asked to leave this country in 1957 because they represented the last of the occupation troops. The 2nd & 3rd battlions of the 9th Marine Regiment were stationed in middle camp and south camp Fuji, right at the base of Mt. Fuji. The mountain became the cold weather training destination for the Marines of that period.
The two battlions were sent to Okinawa and settled in a tent camp because no barracks were available at the time !
There are Marines in Japan today, but no infantry units. Those who are stationed in Japan are usually MP's attached to the Navy, or sea going Marines assigned aboard Navy ships.
The US has military presence in over 125 countries around the globe. Acually, I believe the number to be even greater than that, but the actual number I do not recall. How many of those groups have Marines attached , it's hard to say, however wherever the Navy has a presence, so do the Marines !

I think there are 5 on Okinawa. I have been to Camp Courtney there for a couple of weeks. On the main island they have Camp Zama. There may be others as well.
