Or at least reduce it? I gag almost every time I brush my teeth no matter how much I try to relax it. Is there anything I can do?

Try a smaller brush, like one for a child so you have control over what it touches and can keep it as far from the back of the tongue mouth as possible. Some people have a sensitive gag and there isn't a lot you can do except work toward desensitization. This is a physiological response that is a defense mechanism, so unless you have some fears that revolve around choking, there isn't much liklihood of hypnosis working.

Try changing your toothpaste brand ... and look for a brand that doesn't have as much or any 'baking soda' in it ... and use less toothpaste when you brush. You only NEED a bit less than a 'quarter inch' of toothpaste, but most people use an inch or two on their brush, and it is probably the 'amount of bubbles' and the 'baking soda' that are engaging your 'gag reflex.'

I had the same problem and my dentist suggested to me to use a smaller toothbrush head. It helped a little bit but I still gag everyonce in a while. I hope this helps!

I had the same problem for 20 years. It has reduced with age.

Don't brush so far back. Lean forward over the sink. Get a toothpaste you like.

Great question! I sympathize with you and I'll be keeping track of answers you get. My son can't go to the dentist without an ordeal, and I can't wear my night guard without choking. Maybe it runs in families?

Mmmmm....No I can't, just too easy. Plus you're probably a teenager or something.
