The answer is you don't! LOL! However, you can divert them such that they slowly learns not to chew on the carpet. Also, keep in mind that at 4 weeks, they haven't even fully weaned from their mother yet. Teaching them at this young age is tough. The best thing to do is simply limit the area they can be in (for example, keep them in rooms that have no carpet or in a larger enclosed space).

Diverting them then requires two things. First, catch them in the act, stop tehm (with a firm "No!" but without yelling or punishing) and then praise when they stop. Second, make various chew toys (especially ones that squeak) seem like they are the greatest thing invented. Get toys appropriate for their size and maturity (that is, not something that they can't carry around or could be harmful to them if torn off and swallowed). Just note that puppies will fight over cherished toys - it's their nature. Be prepared for this.

Remember, you are the "alpha" - so you have to teach the puppies what is and what is not acceptable in your house. Your pups have no idea. They will continue to learn for several years. Just because you showed them once or twice doesn't mean they won't do it again. You really have to puppy-proof your house at all times for the next few years (or until the puppies are gone). Dogs are fully mentally mature at 3 years of age, so don't expect them to be fully well behaved until that point (and even then).

My advice, close off their area. Get an indoor or outdoor pen so that they are forced to stay in a more restricted space until they leave your home (provided you are giving them away or selling them).

My dog never ever chewed on anything that she was not supposed to. Go out to your local pet store and get lots of different types of nylabones and chew toys. Then the puppies will be to occupied with the different types of chew toys they wont chew on anything. Get a new chew toy each week. And each week inspect the toys for any loose parts and throw those ones out. I really like the nylabones. They are GREAT! Also remember to get the puppies spayed before they lift their legs (boys) or go into heat (females) or at 12 - 14 weeks of age. Good luck. contact me at minpingurl1@gmail.com if you have any more questions.

I have found that ice cubes work fairly well with teething pups. You may also want to purchase a few hard rubber balls, sterilized bones, nylon bones, and knotted ropes at your local pet store.

Soft squeak toys are fun for small puppies and for games of fetch, but are not sturdy enough for chewing exercise for older pups.

Whenever the puppy chews the wrong thing, remove her to a neutral area and give her something she's allowed to chew.

No shouting, no smacks with a newspaper or hand -- just matter-of-fact corrections in a firm tone of voice. "No, that's mine, here's something for you" is appropriate.

Hope this helps~
