It's a ratio thing. As previously mentioned, it all depends on the scale you're working on.
1 part booze and 1 part mixer can mean one ounce of each, or one gallon of each...either way, it's equal parts.
1 part booze, 3 parts mixer...ounces or gallons, it's still a 1:3 ratio.

It's your choice of how big each part is...the recipe just lays out the proportions.

Easiest way to go about it is just to think of it as fractions. Say your makeing a drink with 5 parts. 2 parts of this 2 parts of that and 1 part of something else. So say that your makeing a 10oz drink your saying 4oz of this, 4oz of that, and 2oz of something else. 2/5+2/5+1/5= 5/5 or 1.

it means the parts have to be relative to one another...

so for a small drink, lets say rum and coke, and it says 2 parts rum and 3 parts coke, you would do maybe 2 SHOTS rum, 3 SHOTS coke.

if you want to make a ptcher of it, you would do 2 CUPS rum, 3 CUPS coke.

If it is asking for one part, maybe it means one shot of whatever alcoholic ingredient it calls for. Which means, you should really put two parts, it will taste better.
