Isn't japanese not based on letters, at least the letters we're used to, but groups of words or something? I could be totally wrong.

XP allows Japanese input form standard keyboard. Just install Asian languages form LANGUAGES folder and chose HIRAGANA from the language bar. This website is also handy for translating http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/wwwjdic.html
