I find it easier to read outside.
It also helps me to point a fan in my face, because that constant air keeps me alert.

My brother learned the whole of Shakespears "Romeo & Juliet" mostly in his sleep by recording it onto a cassett that he then had playing on a constant loop through the night - so if he fell asleep while reading it from the book, he was still reading it out loud to him self from the cassett! Don't know if this will work for you too, but I'm sure with modern technology it will be a lot easier to create a recording of whatever it is you need to learn than it was way back in the 1980's (Yeah we did have the ability to make recordings that far back! Honest!)

You don't say what subject you are studying but if it is literature and you have to read a novel it is possible to get the gist of the story by reading the first line of each paragraph. Very soon you'll be hooked and not able to put the book down...enjoy!

I find if I stand up and read aloud it helps. I spend many nights trying to study and have trouble staying awake. Drink some coffee or other caffeine, don't read right after you have eaten and make sure you have lots of light whever you are reading. Good luck!

If you are doing your reading lying down, your body says: "Ah! We are about to sleep. . .how about NOW??" and you fall asleep. Try reading in a different location, and have a pencil handy to underline bits and make notes.
Good luck on the exam.

drink a lot of caffeen, read it out loud, act like you're teaching it to someone. make someone else read it to you. pace around the room while reading it. get out a highlighter. read it while on a tread mil. all these things in combination should make it easier for you to stay awake and grasp your reading material. hope it's useful

how do you fall asleep???? if that is happening, you're evidently not focusing on the story. just focus on what you're reading and comprehend it.
