I saw the cutest puppy in the world a couple days ago and asked my mum for it, she said no right away.I told her I would do everything for it. She is still saying no. It was a Miniature Schnauzer and I have done as much research as I can. I need help.

You can make a life long plan for the dog. I'll guess that you are around 13 years old. So, you'll have to show that you are thinking ahead.

What happens in 5 years when you go off to college? A mini schanuzer may live 15 years and you certainly can't take him with you to a dorm. Finding a pet friendly apartment while on a college budget may be difficult as well.

What happens to the dog while you are at school, right now? A puppy needs to go outside every half hour or so, and that's hard to do when in Professor Flitwick's math class 10 KM away.

How are you going to pay for vet bills? If the dog has a serious emergency, a vet bill can easily reach $2000. Can you afford this now? Will you be able to afford this when you are in college?

What happens when you are in school full time and working, playing sports, studying, or hanging out with friends? Mini dogs need to be around people. You can't get one and expect it to be happy being at home, alone, 8+ hours at a time.

Back to college, if you take the dog with you, what if he eats your Easter chocolate the week of finals? You'll have to rush him to the emergency vet ($500), possibly have him stay several days ($100+ a day), and then have him come home and be monitored. It's hard to take finals when you are at home making sure that your dog isn't dying.

Where are you looking for information and who are you looking to get this dog from? You say you've done research, so I'm curious where exactly you saw this "cutest puppy in the world"? Was it on a dog show? Or was it in a pet shop? The Schanuzer breed club for Great Britian (I'm guessing that you are in the UK by use of the word "mum") specifically says that pups cannot be sold to pet shops. NEVER buy from one. http://www.schnauzerclub.co.uk/index.shtml

In all honesty, children always mean best when they say they will care for a pet. However, in my experience, that lasts about a week, MAYBE a month. The first cold day of winter, and the child doesn't want to take the dog for a walk. The first serious test, and the studying child doesn't want to feed the dog. The first holiday, and the child wants to up & leave, without the pet. The first pile of vomit, the child suddenly has a tummy ache or a back ache.

The key is to be honest with your parents. Tell them that while you hope to take care of the dog, you *will* need their help. Have them make the decision as a family. If it isn't going to work, then leave it until you are out of college and can make the decision on your own. There will always be plenty of schnauzers out there. : )

Where did you happen to see this puppy? In a pet store? Someone selling in a parking lot or at a market? If so you mom did the right thing by saying no, because it was probably a puppy mill dog, read this - http://www.prisonersofgreed.org/

A pet quality Miniature Schnauzer from a reputable breeder who is bred to have good health and temperment will probably cost around $600, as much as a months rent or house payment for one month for many people, then you also have to pay vet visits for vaccines, fecal samples and neuter/spay with in the first 6 months so roughly vet care for the first year will add up to another $600, then there is the cost of food about $20 a month, dog needs a bed, dishes, collar, leash , city licence, shampoo, grooming, cleaning solution to clean the carpet till the pup is housetrained, a crate so many another $500,

So all totalled for the first year of having and as long as the pup does not get sick it will cost about $1700 to $1800,

Does your mom have $2000 laying around or do you???
Even if the dog was free it will still cost over a $1000 just in the first year for everything else the dog needs
Now if you found ways to earn the $2000 that is need for the first year to buy and care for a dog, then just maybe your mom would let you have but that also depends how responsible you are, as a dog is a lot of work. Are you doing all your chores without having to be nagged, like making your , bed, doing dishes, getting your homework done etc?
Because if you are not responsible for taking care of your own responsibilities now, then mom knows that when the novelty of a new dog wears off, and you start realizing it takes a lot of works to raise and look after, than the care of the dog will then become her responsibility.

Do you like going to camps, do after school activities or staying at your friends for the weekend, what are you going to do with the dog then ? you cannot take it with you, Are you willing to quit going places and stay home instead and look after your dog? Having a dog means loss of freedom to go away and do things, with a dog you have to be home with it or else it will get bored & unhappy and make lots of noise or destroy things. So all you really will be able to do really is go to school and your free time is spent with your dog, instead of with your friends, unless it is places where your dog can go too and there is not too many places a person can take a dog. and you cannot expect your mom to look after the dog because she is not the one the really wants it, you are.

There is more invloved in deciding to have a dog than just learning about the breed

You didn't say how old you are. Having a dog is a lot like being a parent to a human child. Are you ready for that responsibility? Why is you mom saying no? Is it because she doesn't like dogs or is afraid she will do all the work of caring for a puppy, including housebreaking it? You mom may have a good reason for saying no. Do you also realize that it is expensive to raise a dog, get its shots, have it neutered, etc? Sorry I can't be more positive but you may have to prove you are ready for such a venture.

Lots of kids say they will do everything for the dog and then they don't. Your sincerity and ability to follow through on this promise depends a lot on your age. Your Mom is being the responsible parent and adult by not jumping right in to this commitment. If you continue to learn through research and don't badger her and otherwise approach the issue in a mature way, she may rethink her decision...but it might take some time and part of maturity is patience.

Keep trying and prove to her that you can take responsibility of the dog. I've been trying to get one for about eight years now; and im STILL trying!! I think I know everything there is possible about dogs, and I think my parents are really starting to consider it. Remember, a dog is for life, so make sure you know everything about the breed, its cost, the right food to feed it, the right training methods, and the right dog psychology. Don't give up!! It'll happen.

If you can prove that you're responsible enough, then maybe they'll give in. However, they might have their reasons to say no. From experience, kids ALWAYS say that they'll take care of the dog and it's always the parents who end up doing it.
Have you considered everything? The cost of the dog, grooming, vet bills, etc.. think about it, it's quite a responsibility.

do you do everything responsibly...is your room clean like you said it would be, are your grades what you told them they would be...cause if you havent kept up your promises they are just using that as reference to your responsibilities to a new dog...peeing on their carpet cause its not trained well...chewing on their furniture cause your not watching it every second...but if your all that of a child and then some...and you can take care of that dog perfectly, then try to get your parents to go take a look at the dog, and reiterate how much it means to you...look them in the eye!...but also keep in mind your parents might just be looking out for everyones best interests...puppies are expensive, need trips to the vet and store and such...on vacations they need to be accounted for...heck they need to be accounted for to not even stay at home alone for more than about 6 hours at a time...good luck

Say " All of my friends have one. " And, depending on if it's a puppy and if you have the money, then tell them that you will take him to obedience school so he will do everything you tell him to and will be perfect. Tell them that you would take complete responsibilty for it and that you will pay for everything it needs. If that doesn't work than try to comprimise with them. And if that doesn't work, then beg and beg unill you brake them.

And here are a few possible names for it.

Girls: Bootsie, Cleo, Snowy, Leyla, Mini

Boys: Schnauzer, Scooter, Skip, or Skippy, Buddy, and Jasper.

Good luck and I hope you get your puppy.

Save up half the money to pay for it to show her how responsible you are. When you have the money if that exact dog isn't still at the pet store then you'll be able to find the same breed in another store.
