You are describing 2 types of justice. One is preventative and the other is simply punishing the guilty person after the fact. If we can, we ALWAYS try to prevent crime and tresspass so we wont have to punish bad behavior.
Christians actually for the most part are FOR captial punishment because it is written in Biblical law. The people that usually have the problem with it are liberals who by virtue of their many beliefs are not Christians.

I am not sure that the majority of Christians are anti-capital punishment. It is a matter of preference just like any other political issue. Like the people who are pro-abortion and belong to PETA at the same time. Christians are as different from each other as any one else. The Bible does condone the death penalty so that is not really a factor. I would certainly kill someone coming to harm my child, but if they did, the death penalty is ok with me. They should pay for what they have done. I should not have to pay to house him till he is dead at 90 in prison waiting to go to the gas chamber. But that's just me.

I am a Christian and I favor capital punishment when the guilt of the accused is undeniable and the nature of the crime befits the punishment.
Example: Man comes into a convenience store to rob it, makes everyone in the store lie face down, and puts a bullet in the back of their heads. He is caught and clearly identified as the murderer.
Putting a man like that in prison is an insult to the memory of his victims and a slap in the face to all of their loved ones.
Such a man deserves to die. And after that, hell.
The challenge for lawmakers is to properly draft the law to avoid putting to death the wrongly accused.

Short answer: some christians are against capital punishment, some aren't, and there's a difference between killing someone to stop them from killing, and killing him when it's no longer necessary.

I'm not Christian, but I know Jewish law says that everything possible must be done to save the life of a human. If one human is about to kill another, to save the life of the human, it is often necessary to shoot to incapacitate.
The death penalty does nothing to save any lives.

I am a Christian and not against capital punishment.
If someone made a move to harm my child - I would stop them.
Scripture tells us to turn the other cheek - not tie our hands behind our backs.

because the law isn't always right and sometimes you have innocent men but on death's row and killed only to be discovered innocent later.
