Your nails turn white because, well, that's what color the natural keratin is. Have you ever taken a bath and had your nail tips turn clear? That's because they're saturated with moisture. The part of your nail that is still attached to live skin is still being moisturized by your body, so it's clear. As for the half-moon shape on your nail, (called the lunula) that's part of the nail-making factory that cranks out the keratin which becomes your nail plate. Some people have large lunulas, while other people (including me) can't see theirs at all.

I always had the ridges and never gave it much attention. My nails looked fine and grew long. When I turned 35 I developed Psoriasis. When I went to the dermatologist one of the first things he did was look at my nails. Turned out the ridges were one of the symptoms. I don't want to freak you or anyone out reading this but if you're noticing them enough to write about it you should see your physician and/or rheumatologist. If it is Psoriasis don't worry it's not life threatening.

The white crescent under your nail is called a Lunula, and has to do with the growth of your nails before you are born. I'm not sure about the tips, but I'd guess they turn white due to friction, and cleaning, much like a rock after being in a stream in the daylight, may become smooth and turn a lighter color.
