Sand is really eroded and weathered rock. So mountains are worn down by rocks in rivers, and rocks in wind, and waves, which act like sandpaper. Rock gets broken up into smaller and smaller bits, and some minerals in the rock get dissolved out. Over millions of years this is as small as sand grains. Then these little grains of rock are washed out into the sea.

The action of the waves break up larger rocks. This erosion process also happens from wind and rain onland and the particles was towards the sea.
