Of course a snide, rude remark doesn't work.
The etiquette these days for elevators is this: the person closest to the door gets to be the first off. Then the others closest in turn. It does not matter what their genders are.
If your floor comes up, an "excuse me" works the best, repeated if necessary with a more strident tone of voice.

90% of the time I'm either on the ground floor going up, or my floor going down, the elevator is empty. I don't really think about other people coming out because it rarely happens. and when it does, I move. If someone else doesn't... look em in the eye and sternly say excuse me, but with a smile. So you're being direct without being rude, even if its their fault they're in the way.

I really like it when they don't even let you get off and hop right on pushing you out of the way. It makes me want to smack someone! I also really enjoy it when someone is standing in the elevator - the doors are closing - you are running to get it and they let the door slam right in your face.

People space out. Not much to look at or do in elevators, and often people are thinking about what they're about to do.
Don't be snide, be polite.
"Excuse me." -- not in an ugly, nasty voice that no one wants to respond to, but politely.
If that doesn't work, saying it louder possibly tapping them on the shoulder to get their attention.
Instead of resentment from them, you'll usually get an apology, and they'll step aside and hold the door while you exit.
It's not only more efficient than being ugly, but is more pleasant for everyone involved, including the innocent by-standers who aren't blocking you.

I have been guilty of that a few times not even thinking about it. You are correct, it is annoying. I think the urge to get on the elevator rather quickly and to not hold up the other people on the elevator is what has caused me to to do it in the past.

LOL..I work in a place where you must ride an elevator several times a shift and I'm usually pushing a cart. I just politely say, excuse me, if you'll let me off you'll have room to get in.

i read your question wrong the first time and couldn't figure out what in the world was bothering you! i thought you meant people were in front of the elevator trying to get in...
after rereading it I understand and TOTALLY agree with you. it is so annoying. i have have to push people to the side and drag my child through the crowd to get out. :) It is like they have no clue where to go if you say EXCUSE ME. they just get all flustered and step from side to side, staying in place. a bunch of moving people in the elevator...ugh
take care. sd

I understand, but I really enjoy releasing a silent one from time to time in a crowded elevator.
