No, the white German Shepherd is not better than the black and tan. In fact, the white color is considered a fault by knowledgeable German Shepherd breeders. German Shepherds basically fall into a few groups. German showlines, (originate in Germany) and some are bred in U.S. and other countries, German working lines ( same thing), and American showlines, ( These are bred here without much of a standard and many times bred too close ie. father to daughter etc. These are bred to produce something called a flying trot which is like breeding a horse to be a Tenessee walker. These dogs often look like they are crippled when they walk because of this. This kind of breeding has produced many dogs with hip displaysia and has hurt the German Shepherd breed. In Germany, using what is known as the SV breeding standard, their dogs must be x rayed for displaysia and pass a rigorous test (trotting for 12 miles) etc. before they can be bred. Your best bet if you want a good German Shepherd is buy one from a breeder who uses the SV breeding method. Color is the least consideration when getting a good dog. Look on the net for these breeders. They may cost a little more initially but you will save in the long run. After they become attached to their dog most people will spend money at the vet to keep their dog healthy. Better to buy a healthy one to begin with...

The white color is not allowed in the show ring (which can be in itself a disadvantage) - therefore the breeders of white shepherds do not always look for show ring type. Some feel this is a bad thing, some think its a good one. Remember to check if the breeder is doing the proper health checks (hips & elbows definatally)

The American White German Shepherd is actually a completely different breed than other german shepherds. I've found that they can be more skiddish that the black/tan, sables, or solid blacks. I think the temperment of the white german shepherd also isn't as good as the others, especially looking from a working breed point of view.

I have had shepherds most of my life currently with a registered white shepherd. She is not albino. She has black on her nose, around her eyes, and bottoms of her feet. All dogs are different, so you can't judge a dog by its color. My female seems to be more protective of me. The other shepherds I've had (rest their souls) have been black/tan males. They have been more sociable.
There is no better, they are all awesome dogs!

Personally it depends on the way you breed the dog. All dogs start out good it just depends on the way you raise and breed the dog. But I think the Black ones are cuter, Just be carefull how you raise the dog and if you take care of it!

No. White German Shepherds cannot be shown in AKC shows. They are not considered "show quality" and hence are, at least in this, inferior.

No, not necessarily. Some people love them, others are very scared of them. I would imagine that the would cost more as they're not as common as a regular black and brown shepard. I've seen really nice shepards of both colors, and really crazy shepards of both colors...so I couldn't make a judgment of the temperament of them. Best of luck to you.

Better in what way? Definitely more rare. Probably is white because of being an albino. Don't know what other genetic features go with an albino dog...good or bad. At any rate, any German shepherd is a powerful breed that needs a good strong pack leader (you)...

In my experience, white german shepherds are more "squirrelly" than the black/tan.
White is a disqualifying color, and good breeders should not intentionally be breeding them.
The key is a good breeder, check out the parents, and ask for references of previous buyers.
