Images smaller anyone?

Question

I downloaded themes creator for mac to create themes for my sony ericcson W600 how can I make the images smaller to use as background without loosing quality of the image.
Please give any software that I could download for free (Mac OS X)

I use graphicConverter (it's shareware, but it's the best). you can find it at http://versiontracker.com

I also use iphoto (from apple in iLife, not free) and it can do the same thing... easier.. but with less options!
