If he will come to you, ake him inside the house and clean his wound with warm water (flush it if you can). Then apply an antibacterial ointment on it - smear thickly. Keep him indoors or he will get that would infected. If you have a cat kennel or cage, it will be best to keep him in "best rest" for a few days. But frankly, I expect that nasty wound to become infected and the cat will need antibiotics. Call the ASPCA or an animal shelter or even a vet in your area and explain the situation. Make a deal with them that if they help you with the medical treatment of the cat, you will keep and take care of the cat. Most shelters will treat an injured animal... I mean, I do not know of one that will refuse to do so. The cat only needs antibiotics.

He needs medical treatment asap. You could take him to a vet and see if they'll let you pay on a payment plan (most will, they will not turn you away if you don't have the money now). Or you could take him to a local humane society/shelter. Most shelters have their own on-site vets, plus plenty of shelter workers who know how to deal with an emergency injury. That would be free. Since this poor kitty has an open wound you definitely need to take him to someone right away. An infection could be deadly.
Well good luck and good for you being so kind and concerned about this stray.

Take it to a vet and explain that it is a stray and you can't afford to treat it. Some vets will treat it for free, or they may work out some sort of reduced fees or payment plan. I found some baby birds that had been abandoned once, and the vet told me just to bring them in and they would do what they could for them (which, unfortunately, was nothing).
Please do something for the poor thing!

like some said, get triple antibiotic ointment (IE neosporin)
you will need some one to help hold him for the rest...
cleanse the wound as best as possible by flushing it with warm not hot water. and apply the ointment. best to get him inside till he heals, go to the local feed store and get tetracycline powder (its an antibiotic) add about 1/2 tsp per gallon of water (the directions on the back are for turkeys pigs etc, so Iggy them) set this water out for him to drink, it will help fend off infection, change the water every other day, the biggest thing is to keep the wound clean, flush it out with warm but not hot water and re apply the ointment at least once a day till you see improvement, keep him on the tetracycline for at least 3 weeks
best of luck to you
--if you take him to a shelter make sure it a no kill, or they will put him down--

I don't know where you are, but get on line and look for some resue groups in your area. make some phone calls to them and tell them what is wrong. You can even call vets and emergency vet clinics and ask them if they will help. Tell them that it is a stray, and that you can adopt him after he's been treated and neutered and had all his shots. But you can't afford to give him the medical help he desperately needs right now. Call, until you find someone who is willing to help him. Don't call humane society, or ASPCA. sometimes I think they are too quick to put animals down.
Good luck!

This once happened to a cat I had. You could put some triple antibiotic ointment on the wound and that would help it heal quickly with no infection. Also, in many cities there are free spay and neuter clinics to help people in your financial situation get their pets fixed. Call your local humane society or vet and they can direct you to one of these clinics. Good luck.

Well, maybe your cat was in a fight with other cat, and if it is true, it is not a really big deal, 'cuz I have a cat who likes do go outside, but when he comes back he has a lot of sking showing, but he is okay now, anyway... Just don't let your cat go outside for a while, and see what he is going to do, if he is sick he will let you know. But if it gets relly bad just ask your friends for money and take him to the vet.

If you are going to keep the cat you need to get him to a vet FAST. Or if you arent going to keep him take him to your local no-kill shelter or cat rescue. Dont let him suffer like this. He might have gotten attacked by another cat or dog for the skin to be missing. Please get him help.

There are many vets who will help in a situation like this; please take the cat to someone instead of leaving him in pain....how could you leave him in pain? What would you want someone to do for you in the same situation? If you cannot take charge of the situation, then you need to take him to someone who will. I have sympathy for the cat, but not for people who whine but do nothing to help those who cannot help themselves. Children, animals and elderly people all deserve better.

He probably got in a fight with another cat. It tends to happen. Take him to the vet or humane society.
