I bought a liquidiser and decided to make myself a smoothie. I only used a spot of apple juice - strawberries, kiwi and banana - it was vile. I love fruit and would have liked it in a fruit salad. Does anyone have any recipie ideas? please

First of all you need to cut up your fruit and freeze it so the smoothie is ice cold. Room temperature fruit will make hideous concoctions.

I slice bananas, strawberries and put them into ziptop bags and put them into the freezer. I freeze whole fresh blueberries & raspberries, too. You can use frozen mango, add some lime juice, add some pineapple for variety, too.

Once everything is frozen hard, like overnight, then you can make a good smoothie. Two cups fruit juice, 1/2 cup frozen bananas, 1/2 cup frozen strawberries, 1/4 cup frozen blueberries, 1/4 cup frozen raspberries. Blend until smooth, add more juice if it's too thick/if needed.

I don't add ice, ever. Your frozen fruit makes it cold enough and the fruit is sweet enough so you don't have to add sugar or honey or any such nonsense.

I have been making these for 15+ years, at least once a week. They kick butt. And if you add a splash of Rum it doesn't make a bad cocktail, either!

Most smoothie recipes have some kind of liquid and ice base and judging by your recipe you listed in your response, I would say that is why your smoothie was vile. You could try this recipe again, but this time add some kind of liquid like 1/2 cup or soy or regular milk and 6-8 crushed ice cubes or add frozen strawberries (which won't water down your drink like the ice cubes would) and add some kind of sweetener you like, e.g., honey, stevia, turbinado sugar, succanat, fructose, agave nectar, regular table sugar, etc.,(apple juice as a sweetner is HORRID--leave it out!) and add a scoop of low-fat vanilla ice cream and frozen yogurt. These ingredients should make your smoothie yummier. Good luck!

Sweetie, this sounds like a smoothie disaster.I never use juice for smoothies. Here is how i make my smoothies, you can decide if this is something you would like to try.I eat them all the time,i love them.Ok,first you need to prepare your fruit.I tend to stay with one fruit, but once you get a flavor you enjoy. You can start adding items.I enjoy blueberries, raspberry, banana, pineapple, etc. You can go wild with this and try a ton of fruits. However,i never use juice,it does NOT Make it creamy, and a smoothie is generally creamy.I use Yogurt, for every handful of fruit(well say, about a cup of fruit) you will want about 1/2 cup of yogurt. As for the yogurt. You want to get either a flavor that is going to blend well into your fruit flavors, one that is the same as your smoothie, or use a neutral flavor such as plain, and will pick up the flavor of the fruits.I usually use plain,or vanilla. Now,in your blender you should have your fruit of choice, your yogurt of choice(two tablespoons to 1/2 cup) and a few ice cubes, generally i do a handful or so of ice. Now,blend it,if it is to "thick" for your machine, add a splash of milk or half and half.Make sure you get top quality fruits,as that is the main part of your smoothie. It is what is flavoring your smoothie.I do not know who told you to use apple juice,i never use it and i love smoothies.I eat them regularly. Also,if you find you need to sweeten your smoothie(hence the importance of excellent fruit) use a drizzle of honey to keep that healthy balance but it will also sweeten it.If you want to go out on a limb and use sugar or a sugar substitute by all means do so.This is merely some suggestions.Good luck hun,and have a good night.

Check out the site below for a bunch of smoothie recipes.

Bananas tend to be the main ingredient since bananas add to the smoothness and thickness of a smoothie. The other ingredients tend to add the flavor.

I think the kiwi threw your recipe off. Sometimes is better to start with less and then add.

Banana-Strawberry Smoothie recipe (From website below)
Ingredients
2 ripe small bananas
1 cup frozen unsweetened whole strawberries
1 8-ounce carton vanilla low-fat yogurt
3/4 cup milk

Directions
1. Peel bananas. Cut bananas into chunks. Place banana chunks, frozen strawberries, yogurt, and milk into blender a container.

2. Cover blender and blend on high speed about 1 minute or until mixture is smooth. Turn off blender. Pour drink into 2 glasses. If desired, serve with pieces of toast spread with peanut butter. Makes 2 servings.

Non Dairy Smoothie
Banana, Strawberry and Pineapple Smoothie

1 whole banana
1/2 can of pineapples (or 1 whole fresh pineapple if you prefer more)
Method

The way I make my smoothies is instead of ice cream i use the no-bake pudding mix in vanilla or simmilar types of flavors, like the jello brand, and get the sugar free or non-fat types to keep it atleast fairly healthy. I just mix one packet of that with some milk and add whatever fruit i'd like, such as frozen strawberries, blueberries, bannanas, peaches, and the like.

Sorbet is much better than ice cream... it's more like fresh fruit than ice cream and it's lighter, leaving you feeling like you can still move.
2 oz peach sorbet
1/2 cup strawberries
1/4 cup water

Remember too the consistency you're looking for is not like liquid juice but just a tad thicker. Play around with the recipes you get and see what you like.

Ick. That would be vile. Try this. Take a cup of milk or yogurt. Add about another cup to two cups of whatever fruit you like. Add a tablespoon of honey and blend. My favorite of all time is a cup of milk, two slightly ripe bananas and a tablespoon of honey. yum. Even better is to add a little ice cream or frozen yogurt....Enjoy!

Get a single sized serving of your favorite yogurt (i use strawberry or vanilla). dump it in the blender with about 3-4 frozen strawberries, 1 whole peeled bananna, & a splash of orange juice. Blend til smooth. (You can also add protein powder if you like)

Your ingredients sound good, but they are lacking. Try crushing some ice cubes first, and then adding some vanilla or flavored yogurt. Then it becomes very cold and smooth. Any number of fruits work. I love to add pineapple.
