i took her home. i posted posters in the area she was found, reported it to the police and called the pound also. the first week i called the pound the man just took my information. the next week another man answered when i called to check in & started demanding i bring in the dog. he said i had to bring her there for 7 days and then i could take her. i have heard many horror stories regarding pounds euthanizing dogs prematurely etc, so i just can't bring her there. does anybody know the laws for this in nj.

heres the thing, some weirdo calls me today saying the pound gave them my number. he didn't match the description of the dog properly but proceeded to insist that i give him my address. he started to say that i would be in alot of trouble cause i should bring the dog to the pound. i got a real bad feeling and asked him if i could call him back and he said he thought i was acting fishy and he was gonna call channel 12 news. i was thinking it was the guy from the pound, but that would be illegal for him to do that right?

if this man had your phone # he can get your address by reverse look up. just to be safe i would take the dog to the pound. I know it is hard but go and check on her every day. and hope for the best. But if someone is looking for her that is a good family and the dog just got out or worse was dog napped and it does happen maybe she has a chip and they can be found. just keep in touch with them

Personally, I would bring her to a local vet and make sure she has no microchip or tatoos. The guy at the shelter sounds fishy for sure. If it's a good breed he may just be trying to sell the dog for money (BOGUS!!)

But, if you do need to take her to the pound try to find another one to take her to and make sure to visit her every day (several times a day if possible). Also, if the dog has no microchip or tattoo and the person claiming to be the "original owner" has not had the dog licensed then there may be a good chance you would have rights to the dog.

For example ... my best friend lost her dog because of a shelter. The dog's license was expired for probably like one month and her boyfriend's mom took the dog in and said they could put the dog to sleep. The pound closed before my friend could get the dog back and when she went in early the next morning her dog was already dead.

You would think they would actually try to see if the real owner would come in within a day or two huh!? My friend had just paid $1000 a few months before the dog died to save her after a car accident and would have paid more if the pound had charged her anything.

Anyhow, if she had no right to the dog because of a one month expired license then there is no saying that this so called "owner", who cannot even verify correct details about the dog, does infact really have any rights to her.

Good luck!!! Don't let some jacknut take her away if he isn't the real owner! Be smart :)

You are being harassed. I would tell the police about that. Post up pictures of you name phone number and a picture of the dog at your local Stewarts, Extra mart, post office, stores, and vets office. Also post up found dog ads on websites devoted to finding pets. I would take the dog to the vet and get it innoculated and checked out. I would also look for a no-kill shelter in your area and let them take her in. Or maybe an animal rescue that you can take her to and they will find her a good home or even let you foster her for a while. You could just keep her and see if an owner calls. Remember not to give out specific markings on the dog. make the person identify the dog if they call. Also I would suggest meeting them in a public place with the dog. Dont give them your address. If you need any more questions answers contact me at minpingurl1@gmail.com. Good luck

Most places require you to relinquish the stray for a minimum period - in your area it is obviously 7 days. Then the dog may be adopted. They won't euthanize the dog during the 7 day waiting period - the intent is to give the owner the chance to claim it. Find out exactly when the waiting period is up and tell them you want to adopt the dog the moment it is available. Then show up exactly the moment the waiting period ends and get the dog.

They won't euthanize a healthy dog that has someone who wants to adopt it. People who work at shelters would much rather adopt than euthanize animals. They get an undeserved rap for doing a tough job.

sadly the pound will likely euthanize the dog. try googling some no kill shelters. also, just a warning, some people will say they want the puppy (for instance, if you advertise you are giving a dog away in a newspaper or on the computer) or a kitten, and some times these people do this so that they can feed these poor animals to pet snakes. i have been warned about it twice now, both times from pet stores and my veteranarian. i suggest a no kill shelter, even if you have to be a temporary foster mother to this puppy. please don't take her anywhere that will euthanize her!!!! good luck

In many states is is "illegal to harbor a stray".
I'd call the police department's animal control and ask them what the laws are.
