People always recommend going to a movie -- but if you don't know the person, isn't a bad first date?

Not really. The only way it would be bad if things got a little too friendly in the dark. If you're worried about not talking enough to get to know the person, then there's always other places you could talk before or after the movie. Plus, the movie could be a conversation piece to get to know each other even more afterwards.

As long as it's not a porno i don't think it's too bad. However, 2 or 3 hours sitting in the dark with someone you really don't know or may not even like can seem like an eternity. I would rather go have dinner and maybe a couple of drinks to get to know each other a little first. Maybe a movie on the the 2nd date.

I don't think so. The movie scene allows you to find out enough about the person to decide if you want a 2nd date. If you pick them up or they pick you up, you can chit-chat until you get there. Just before the show starts you can chit-chat. Most people decide how they really feel about a person within the first 10 minuets of conversation anyway. If the date goes well then you can have coffee, drinks, or food afterward. If not, you can chit-chat about the movie until it's done.

Seeing a movie and then dinner is a great first date because it opens the door for a discussion.

No, in contrast, it can show you a lot about a person, right from the get- go. Do they talk through the movie?
Do they try and grope you through the movie?
Do they talk on their cell phone and annoy the hell out of everyone around them during the movie?
Are they loud, or curtious to people around them?
DO they eat a lot of snacks, or sort of pick around on them?
Etc...etc...
It's a good judge of character to 'observe' how they act in public. lol

Yes it is a very bad idea. You two should be going to get coffee or dinner. How are you two going to talk about what you like and dont like? How are you going to find out if there nice or creepy? Trust me grab a good cup of coffee and talk it up!

a movie is not really a good idea to start with --- the idea is to get to know each other so you can decide if you want a second date
