Why is freedom important?

Are we generally agreed that freedom is preferable to slavery? Well, then, let's apply that idea to the idea of religion.

I'd like to say it's impossible to impose a religion on the people anyway; but it's obviously not. It's the reason we're mostly "Christian" today. It began with a few enthusiastic devotees, became fashionable, eventually gained the sponsorship of the State, and was finally forced on the rank and file peasants. And we'll always have those people who are happy to do whatever they're told, as long as they don't have to think about anything for themselves. Fortunately for the rest of us, we at least have the semblance of freedom of religion (speaking, I suppose and hope, for the majority of people whose countries allow them access to Yahoo Answers...lol).

It's a right protected by our constitution. You don't jack with something like that. Men lost their lives so we could have it. Were their lives not worth it? Also, freedom of religion means that you get to believe whatever you want without being persecuted. You aren't murdered or beaten. That was something the founding fathers understood.

Everyone deserves the right to do and believe what they want within legal boundaries. Free will is important to everyone. It shows what kind of person you are or can be by the choices you make or don't make. If people were forced to believe certain things then I don't consider that true. They may say they believe to keep themselves safe but if they don't in their heart then its not real.

It is important to me because I don't want any religion being forced down my throat! I want to believe in a religion only because I believe in it! Quran says religion should not be forced upon, 2:256: "Let there be no compulsion in religion.."

Because nobody likes the govt telling them how to or who to worship.

Would you like the govt telling you to be a Muslim or you would be killed? That is one of the primary reasons they establshed colonies over here in the new world was to get away from tyranny.

Frankly, I'm much more interested in freedom *from* religion...
But your way can work, too, as long as fundamentalists realize that their one particular brand of delusion is no better than anyone else's -- and that they can't make their unsupported mythical beliefs into law.

Peace.

Aren't Human Rights important to you, or would you prefer a slave society?
I'm assuming you are a human being........like the rest of us.

So I don't have to believe in something I don't believe in and live my life that way when I don't want to be in that religion.
