Well, the problem is that that’s a very big “if”.
The UK only produces 2% of the world’s man-made CO2. According to the Stern report, if the UK stopped producing *any* CO2, right now, the effect on temperature by 2035 would be a reduction of 0.006°C.
Is it just me, or does that seem a little bit pointless?
Also, given that it has yet to be conclusively proved that human production of CO2 is actually having any effect on the climate, our sacrifice might be completely in vain.
And another thing, why do we believe these predictions of the future? We wouldn’t believe what the weather man tells us about next week, but some people blindly swallow what the global warming alarmists say will happen in 100 years!
Are they insane? Let me put it this way, I’ve just started up a new company. I guarantee that it’s going to be hugely profitable and will be worth trillions in 100 years. So, are you going to buy any shares in my company? Of course you won’t, so why do people believe the nonsense about global warming?
We have no idea what the future holds in store for us. We may make huge sacrifices and spend billions of pounds to cut CO2 emissions, only to find that, in 20 years, some new, clean form of power is discovered, that we all happily convert to - solving the problem at a stroke. Remember, 80% of France’s electricity is produced by a power source that was unknown in 1900, a time when New York city was worrying about the environmental problems caused by horse poo. Within a few short years, the problem disappeared, all on it’s own, as people stopped using horse and moved to cars.
The fact is, at present, global warming is not causing any problems at all for the vast majority of the population and may never do. Can anyone reading this honestly say that they have suffered at all due to global warming?
Until global warming becomes an *actual* problem, not just a possible problem, our effort and money would be better spent elsewhere.
:::edit:::
I’ve got to ask ‘fiona4281’, below, what exactly do you mean by…
“…only if everyone on this planet had the decency to realise the narrow escape we'd had…”
Er, what “narrow escape” was that then?

I am willing to do something even if I, alone, could not really make a difference. If everyone has the 'well, I'd do something, but what's the point if it's just me' attitude, then no one will ever do anything! I for one would like to be able to die knowing that, at the very least, I did all I could to leave a world that future generations can live in. For example, I have no intention of ever owning a car, unless it is absolutely essential to the job I do, and I can conclusively prove that I will be doing something better for the environment by using it than by not using it.

Well if you could prove to me conclusively that if I gave up something and nobody else in the whole world did anything at all that I could still save the world, of course I would do it. But the problem is that that is not the case. EVERYONE in the world has to cooperate to make a real difference to our impact on the climate. It is like public TV. You get to watch it even if you don't pay, so most people don't pay.

I dont like bills, like everyone else. My constant trials at eliminating or cutting down on my electric bills serve me and the enviroment. I also try to not throw any food away. Dont drive for fun. I buy dried beans and soak them then cook them. Cook mega meals outside. CF lighting. This is just a short list. In the end my methods sometimes take more time, but my bills are low and it helps to use less energy. Did I tell you my average electric bill is 50 bucks and I dont think i'm missing out on any necessities. Probably wont work for everyone but everyone is not paying my bills. You do what ya gotta do.

Contrary to an answer to another question on global warming, I probably would. But only if everyone on this planet had the decency to realise the narrow escape we'd had and started having more respect for every living thing, be it trees, the oceans, or a humble mouse. Because without that there just isn't any point.

I understand that some misinformed people attempt to declare that non everlasting chilly temperatures are reason adequate to have self belief that worldwide warming is fake. on a similar time as those claims are incorrect, I nonetheless think of that we don't be attentive to adequate correct to the situation to make sure that the present worldwide warming replaced into led to by ability of people or that it's going to proceed till the planet is fried. The Earth's temperature continuously fluctuates by way of fact of quite a few components, lots of which we don't be attentive to approximately yet. i think of it could be silly to spend thousands of billions of greenbacks on reducing carbon emissions as quickly as we don't be attentive to for specific in spite of if or no longer it is going to actual do something.

I would and so would alot of other people. Just not enough people. If you stop using incandescent light bulbs and replace them with compact florescent bulbs it will actually make a hell of a difference.

No body is doing anything to make any difference but they are making energy very costly so only rich people will be able to buy it. It is very easy to use good engineering and make energy clean, cheap and abundant for everyone but no one is thinking about this at all.

I think that if it were just us it would get the effort, but places like China ,and India ,where there is a huge population ,they will do what they want.
