No it's very easy to get around and safe.
The city for the most part is layed out in a north/south/east/west grid, so getting around and finding places is easy. Only the lower section has rambling streets, and even then it's not bad.
The subway uses a simple color - letter/number system and is very safe and takes you everywhere.

for the most part, the streets in NYC are laid out in a grid pattern, so it's pretty hard to get lost. Just remember: Streets run east and west (crosstown) and get higher in number as you travel north (uptown). Avenues, on the other hand, run north and south (uptown/downtown) and increase in number as you travel west. In the midtown area, the avenues are in the following order: 2nd, 3rd, Park, 6th, Broadway, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th 11th. Generally, they stay in the same order throughout most of the city, except for downtown, where the streets get all messed up, but in midtown, where you'll probably spend most of your time anyway, the only tricky avenue is Broadway, because it's somewhat diagonal, and starts between Park and 6th, and joins with 8th at Columbus Circle.

The Subway is easy to navigate and the city itself is not hard to get around. Driving is another story, traffic is tough to deal with and the amount of time you waste getting from one spot to another can be frustrating. I enjoyed taking the subway it was safe, clean, and on time. You can always take a taxi if you have to get somewhere ASAP. Good luck

I went to NYU...it's really nice...
But it's not California...
And it is definitely not the Bay Area.
