In other words, what criteria do you use to say that a person is technically living or technically dead?

Higher brain function.
Without higher brain function, the body can be kept "alive" by artificial means (and sometimes will even stay alive on its own, if given nourishment through a tube, thanks to the lower brain which maintains hearbeat, respiration, etc.). But without that higher brain function, the lights may be on but nobody's home.

And yes, the same applies to a fetus -- in most cases, higher brain function isn't measurable until 24-30 weeks into a pregnancy. Just like an adult with severe brain trauma, the tissue is alive but there's no possibility of self-sustaining life.

Peace.

You are clinically dead when the heart and respiration stops. All hope is not out, because in a certain timeframe after cardiac arrest, it is in many cases possible to jumpstart the heart again, and get respiration going by applying first-aid. Even if the first aid does not succeed in getting the heart and respiration started again, it may give the patient enough oxygen so that the brain does not die, and more advanced methods of starting the heart can be applied.

Clinical death is the cessation of blood circulation and breathing. It occurs when the heart stops beating in a regular rhythm, a condition called cardiac arrest.

How ever, brain dead patients are considered to be dead in the event that the patient is an organ donor.

I believe that clinically alive is that the brain still has activity showing whether the person is conscience or not.

Clinically dead is probably when NOTHING is working!

To treatment is to restoration to a wholesome difficulty. yet whilst somebody has been declared clinically ineffective, it ability the part of their concepts that controls the needs that look after existence, has been destroyed. It won't have the ability to be restored.
