There are 2 sides to this argument. I agree that it would warm the fridge and possibly (briefly) the other food in the fridge. This would need more electric to cool it again.

That said, if you leave food out to cool it is prone to all sorts of airborne germs.

I tend to let most of the heat dissipate then put it in the fridge, possibly slightly warm.

The fridge is cold so if you put in hot or warm food the inside temperature could rise and cause some of the food to go off. As the fridge cools down over an hour or so all the food in the fridge will go cold again. You would not know in this case if the food had gone off until you eat it. Then it is too late. It would also cause the fridge to over work and it could damage the compressor etc.

Because putting warm food in a fridge or freezer will raise the temperature and give bacteria an opportunity to spread.

Like the previous person said, if you put hot or warm food in a fridge, the temperature of the fridge will increase, as well as the other food in it and the fridge has to work harder to bring the temperature back down.

It's to do with the spread of bacteria......I'm not sure how it works exactly but by putting food that is still warm straight into the fridge the food goes bad quicker. I think it might be to do with the extreme temperature difference and that the food spreads heat around the fridge. Think of warm milk.....goes sour quicker doesn't it!

If you put it in the fridge while still warm it raises the temperature of the inside of the fridge and therefore puts the other food at risk from bacteria multiplying

Two reasons, one if the food is hot when you put it in the freezer it will melt the ice in the freezer. two if the food is hot when it is put in the freezer it will not freeze evenly.

To avoid heating up the other contents; no more than that. Put the food in as soon as you can though, the sooner its gets cold (or freezes) the better.
