My friend told me that one of our schools trainers told him that if you do 100 push ups a night, for a week, totaling 700 push ups on the week, then you max bench press weight will go up by 5 pounds. I wanted to know if this was true. If not, will it go up by some just not 5lbs?

Push-ups work the same muscles as bench press. You're, in a sense, bench pressing 2/3 - 3/4 of your body weight with each push-up. If you condition your body to do many push-ups, you'll probably increase your bench press ability because you're strengthening the same muscle groups. Hope that helps. See below for instructions on how to do a proper push-up. Best of luck!

Your bench press would probably go up at least 5 pounds with that routine, but it would soon plateau. If you did 150 push ups a night for the following week, your max would not increase significantly. If you want to increase your max for any lift, the best way is to train with heavy weights and do multiple sets of 4-8 reps. Once you can do more than 8 reps in the first set, increase the weight.

Also, even if you are just doing pushups you shouldn't train 7 days a week - you need some recovery time to allow your muscles to grow. (If you are training with heavy weights for maximum gains, allow 3-5 days off between workouts for each muscle group.) So if you attempted the bench press on day 8 after a week of killing yourself with push ups every night, your max might actually go down!

No it is not true, but let me tell you this by experience, in the service I use to average over 200 push ups a day. By doing push ups, this will definitely help you bench press because you developed your chest, short and long Arm muscles.
Hope this helps.

do 100 pushups a day, but each day increase to do you max amount of pushups, keep doing that and in a week if you improved your max should improve by more than just 5 lbs. Basically if you can bench your weight do handstand push ups to increase the preassure.

It will go up just due to the increased exercise. The most notable difference will be in the first week or two, then the percentage gain will drop a little because you are in better fitness.
