RE:
What does cat urine smell like?
There's a weird smell in my new apartment, and I know that the previous resident had a cat. If the odor was cat urine on the hardwood floors, what would it smell like?

Most likely it would smell like ammonia... No matter where the urine is, it will smell strongly of ammonia.. Cat urine has a very distinct smell, and if left alone and not cleaned up, it will crystalize...... Ammonia will answer yer question... :-D

Phoebhart is correct. A black light is a much more effective (and better smelling!) way to detect cat urine

strong ammonia smell and somethin else underlying it... stronger smell than dog pee or human pee.
If you suspect cat urine leftover from the previous tenant, buy a "black light" and shine it in corners and the floors of your apartment. Cat urne will glow electric blue with "black light."
When you find the spots, spray or soak them in a commercial cat stn and odor remover like "Nature's Miracle" ($8.00 a large bottle). That should take care of the odors.

It would smell sort of like a men's public restroom that was none too clean, even though the toilets had been flushed, only the smell would be more pungent. The smell might be disguised somewhat by efforts to use chemicals to kill the smell.

A strong odor of ammonia is what it closely resembles.
To neutralize it try mopping the floors and wiping down the walls with a solution of vinegar and hot water - maybe 6 cups of vinegar to a gallon of water. Vinegar helps to neutralize the odor.
If it still stinks you may need to have the landlord repaint your walls. That will help too.
Good luck!

It's weird....I can't quite put a word on it... sort of sharp and ammonia like... you'll know it if you smell it. On wood floors, no less? Yuck!
