I got my belly button pierced a few years ago, and I think the barbell that was used was cheap, thus it wouldn't heal properly and eventually I had to take it out. I also had my ears pierced and could only wear gold and such. I know that tattooing ink contains some metals, so I was wondering if there's a chance I'd be allergic to the tattoo itself? I've read it's rare, but because my body's so picky, I can never be too sure. Any help is appriciated. Thanks!

Hello. I have really high metal allergies as well. Ironically I also have five piercings, all I wear is gold, titanium and anything 100% pure. At that gold has to be 10K or higher to not cause an allergic reaction. Okay, as far as tattoos, I asked my piercer about metal allergies and inks. She said that the best thing to do is get a list of the different metals that the artist you are going to go with uses. Take the list to your doctor and have them check the metal content purity or whatever they call the test. Also, if your artist knows that you have really high metal allergies they can use the purest to begin with. That should take the risk of having an allergic reaction of any sort down to a minimal. Good luck with a tat! I'm getting one soon too!

I have a friend who is the same way. She can't wear any kind of jewelry unless it is of a higher quality metal such as gold. She did just fine with her tattoos though. You may want to talk to your doctor about your chances of being allergic though.

As long as the metal used is surgical steel you should be fine, all the tattoo artist I know have always used surgical steel.. I too have very sensitive skin and can only wear pure silver or gold or surgical steel... I wouldn't buy body jewelry from just anybody because body peircings are so common now that you can buy the jewelry anywhere even Walmart but places like this don't sell surgical steel it's usually plaited silver NOT GOOD for sensitive skin... I have a tattoo too and it didn't react... make sure your artist is using surgical steel

I'm the same way. I can only wear earrings and such that are gold, silver, platinum or hypoallergenic.

I have a tattoo. You should be fine.

The best advice I can give you is to call the tattoo artist that is going to be doing your tattoo. and ask him about it. I think he would no more about it. good luck. I'm allergic to earings and that too good luck.

you are most likely allergic to nickel. i am as well, i have 8 tattoos, and have never had a problem. just make your artist aware of your allergy, and ask if you are at risk.
