Personally, I believe that public prayers should be short, sweet, and to the point and get it over with. I hate listening to a prayer that is more like someone preaching a sermon than a real prayer.

The two most common public prayers are invocations and benedictions. Invocations are said at the beginning of a meeting and the primary purpose of such a prayer it to invite God to the meeting and send his spirit to let his will be known. Benedictions are said at the end of a meeting to thank God for attending and sending His spirit.

There are other reasons for public prayer too, but they should be short, sweet, and too the point and then finished.

Public prayer is awesome as a Muslim. You are around your brothers and sisters and it's an amazing feeling.

If you are talking about praying in public, but alone...that's difficult but again an adrenaline rush. When you can focus just on God and nothing else, it helps so much!

If you are bored in prayer, you are doing it for the wrong reasons. Yes, your mind wanders but you gotta work on that.
I've never been bored during prayer, but my mind wanders a lot.

May Allah help me focus.

Public prayer not only makes you comfortable talking to God while others may make fun of you, but it also allows you to focus on something other than yourself. The reason that some people's minds wander, like you said, is because they make the mistake of thinking that the prayer time's purpose is to satisfy you and your needs. It's not. Prayer's purpose is to satisfy GOD. I hope that helps.

If you are just waiting for it to be over, and your mind is wandering, your mind is free to meditate on something more uplifting, or maybe to make out your grocery list...or maybe to just enjoy having a chance to stop and rest...

Good time to make my grocery list.

Are we out of peanut butter? Should I get crunchy this time?

To spread propaganda. Pamphlets died out a while ago, and burning at the stake is said to be unfeasible...why I don't know.

So now us fundies go for public prayer.

P.S. I'm not a fundie.

At the least it reminds Christians and other believers to follow their religion and to love others.

If nothing else, it promotes quiet contemplation and that's good for everyone.

If it's boring to you than you're not letting it help you. That's your agency(free will) being used.
