Some Christians are decent, honourable, and genuinely concerned with others.
Other Christians are self-righteous, hypocritical and take great pleasure in telling others how they look forward to watching them burn in hell.

I am not a card-carrying Christian and therefore probably qualify to answer: Self righteousness is not the sole possession of Christians, even though many are self righteous. I think that attitude comes not from the religion but from the quality of mind. There is as much self righteousness in those of all other religions and those who have no religious faith or leanings at all.
Look to the mind - that's where that problem is, ditto greed, anger and ignorance.
Plenty of people use their faith as a justification for these things, also some scriptures can be easily interpreted in such a way as to encourage them. The answers are in the heart.

Not all Christians, no. But some - yes. And that's not necessarily my belief, but rather my observation. See, when you hold really high standards to everyone else and *expect* them to follow certain rules, then you should expect the same from yourself. After all, you cannot condemn a man for drinking from the same well you drink from every morning. The Christians who are self-righteous hold these high standards up to everyone else and preach that everyone will go to hell who doesn't do A, B, and C. Then you find out they're always doing A, B, and C and the rules just don't apply to them because they've got a direct line to God, are chosen, and everyone else is scum under their boot. Once again I'll say not all Christians are like this - but I've met many who are.

Yes and no. There seem to be quite a lot of christians on this site who get very defensive, giving the impression all christians are that way. Personally, I think it's about half/half in the real world. I've met some incredible christians who glow with God's love. Maybe it's the way a christian presents the truth. The bible tells us to speak kind and gently. Not doing so could be the problem right there. Human nature is very powerful.

I believe that to be a christian doesn't mean that you have to go to church, i think that it is how u behave in your day to day life. I do however think that there are a lot of people out there who think that they can do as they please for 6 days of the week and then go to church on a Sunday and everything is OK! I dont think that true Christians are self righteous, but i do think that a lot of people use it as a pretence.

Some are self-righteous, but certainly not all. Many people reared in Christian circles, proscribe freethinkers, and liberals, science, and education. Perhaps `unworldly` or `naive`are more fitting than, self-righteous, as so many `Christians` are very poorly informed about their version of truth.

I don't think many Christians think they are self righteous as our righteousness is not derived from our good deeds but from the God's righteousness given to us freely. That being said because we think we are right is no big deal, those who disagree with us think they are right also.

I think there are some that are self-righteous, called fundamentalists aren't they?. I think it is because they think their religion is the only true and right way...that all other religions are of the devil. They believe we are fooling ourselves and that we are in need of their pity and prayer to save our sorry hides from the eternal flames of hell.
What might be religiously true for one...might not be for another.

Yes, I do believe many Christians are self-righteous:
They hold themselves up as going to heaven, and others are not.
They hold the truth over every other group on the planet.
They say that their "faith" based thinking trumps logic.
They cast judgment over other people, even trying to jail them, for violations of their religion's rules.
