Most needs for tax return information can be met with a tax return transcript or a tax account transcript, rather than an actual copy of the return. The tax return transcript shows information from the return as it was originally filed. A tax account transcript shows any later adjustments either the taxpayer or the IRS made after the tax return was filed. Transcripts are provided free of charge. These transcripts may be acceptable substitutes for an actual copy of the return by the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services and lending agencies for student loans and mortgages. Check with your agency or lender to be sure.

You can obtain a transcript by calling (800)–829–1040 or by completing and mailing Form 4506-T (PDF), Request for Transcript of Tax Return, to the address listed in the instructions to request all types of transcript verification of non-filing, and wage/income information.

Transcripts will be mailed directly to you, and should be received within two weeks after the IRS gets your request. Transcripts can be mailed to a third party if you specify this on Form 4506–T. However, you must sign and date the form giving your consent for the disclosure.

If he's not willing to give you a copy, there's nothing that you can do about it.

But as he's in the military, you COULD contact his commanding officer. The military requires members to support their families and what he is doing is in poor form at the very least. His CO may be willing to motivate him to do the right thing.

I'm assuming that you filed separate returns. If that is the case, you have NO legal standing to get a copy of his tax return or an extract of his tax account from the IRS. The IRS will refuse any requests for another taxpayer's information as required by law. Your ONLY hope is that he gives you a copy of the return.

I'm not sure if transcripts for the 2006 returns (due next month) are available yet. If they are, he can download the form from the link below. If he is telling you he will bring it 'if he can find it', I wonder if he's even looking.

In your additional information you asked if his W-2 would be enough for the Financial Aid Form. I can't remember what information is required and the only online form I found requires me to enter student information before I see the page for parents income.

Your tax return, or his? If you filed jointly, then you can eventually get a transcript from the IRS, when they are available for this year. If it was just filed, that could be awhile.

If he filed separately, then you can't get a copy unless he gives it to you.

If IRS wants a copy of your return, it means it does not have one. If you still have Turbo Tax on your computer the return should be saved.
