During a report on the Trident debate, the BBC reported that our nuclear weapons are targeted at 'remote points in the ocean'

If this is true then who is our enemy now? The fish?

Mostly Russia & China.

Cops carry their weapons in their holsters aimed at the ground. It doesn't mean they are looking for subterrainian criminals. They say the weapons are targeted to points at sea so the weak minded people will feel better. They can be re-targeted in seconds.

We don't need an enemy. Do you really think that Britain would have played a part in world politics in the last 50 years without a nuclear Armoury.

And I think you misheard that, why would we be targetting the Ocean??? Our Subs would be located at 'remote points in the ocean'

They are aimed at points in the ocean. It's for safety in case of an accidental launch. It's highly unlikely that would ever happen but in the off chance it would, nobody would get vaporized. It takes an MT (missle technician) less than a minute to re-aim those missles. He punches in the coordinates and GPS does the rest.

back in the good old days of the Coold War, I completely supported Trident...

nowadays, considering the cost, as far as I can see, the only reason for having it is because the French have it (I remember the joke from Yes, Prime Minister !)

... and maybe that's not reason enough.

Especially with the news that it won't be fully independant ...

The Neptunians! Damn their Fishy Hides.

Mind you i think we should target the White House and a certain Maniac called G. W'er After all we could quite easily go on his axis of evil.

The missiles are targeted that way as a safety measure in case of accidental launch. The missiles can be retargeted in minutes to any target in range of the missile.

Due to Global warming, the Fish would get bigger and they will be nuclear f**t enabled so we have to be prepared for the eventuality that one would blow up Cornwall with a nuclear blast. About 7.5 on the Richter scale. BOOM!!!!

I think you perhaps misunderstood, or they phrased it oddly. Trident missles are LOCATED at sea, on nuclear submarines, not targeted at the sea.

Retargeting the weapons involves entering new coordinates. The GPS does the rest.

A deterrent is never intended to be used. So I'd go for the cheap inflatable nuclear weapons and burst them when nobody's looking if I need to scare someone away.
