your dogs need obedience school.
And thanks for trying to keep them quiet, that's appreciated more than you know!

Loud noises and water are indeed ways to get a dog's attention and stop barking. But the dog will only stay quiet if he feels confident in your leadership and that you have the situation under control. That is, when you say "hush", he shuts it because you are the "alpha dog" in the house. This may require obedience training - which will teach both your dog and, more importantly, you. I highly recommend it. I had both my pups trained and it truly is a wonderful difference.

Do keep in mind though that dogs bark. That's what they do. If the barking is excessive even with training, then you may need to get a special anti-barking collar. Some collars give electric shocks, which I'm not a fan of (but some love). However, I recommend a spray collar. Every bark emits a spray so that the dog will learn not to bark. I provided a link to a site that discusses such a collar.

Have you tried a spray bottle yet? Just get a bottle from a house hold cleaner and be sure to wash it out well before putting water in it and using it. It won't harm the dog and it will give them a quick jolt. If that doesn't work then simply ignore it. I know that sound tough, but normally when a dog is crying all they want is attention, they don't care if it's negative attention or not. So yelling at them is giving them that attention that they want. Simply, just ignore it for a while, see if that calms him/her down.

i had the same problem with a miniature schnauzer. all you have to do is get some lemon juice in a squirt bottle and when you go for a walk, when the dog barks immediately do a quick spray at the nose. it may sound a little cruel but it works! good luck
