The style is not flattering on most women. Just because that is all a store carries, that doesn't mean you are required to go with that style. Getting a dress custom made is not much more expensive and it's fairly easy to do if you know where to go.

As far as strapless gowns, I just wish there were plenty of choices in other styles. I cannot wear strapless as my chest is too large and though there are some other styles available, they aren't as many...I know strapless is the predominant style, but if you aren't among those who could appropriately wear one, you're kind of left to whatever else...I just bought a destination wedding magazine, and in the entire magazine, there were pics of only like 3 dresses that weren't strapless...c'mon-what about me?

My mother has always refused to let me go to church bare-shouldered - but I want to feel beautiful and sexy on my wedding day. The compromise we've been able to reach is a sleeveless gown with a sheer, beaded jacket that can be worn during the ceremony and removed for the party. After all, during a wedding the couple faces the altar and the congregation can only see the back of the gown, and a long jacket forming the train is an ideal way to have a gorgeous back that can go away.

The other thing that drives me nuts is when bridesmaids have to wear the same dress - what suits a size-2 (like a clingy, strapless number) probably doesn't suit a size-14. So brides should pick out a fabric and a length and have each attendant choose the style that flatters her. That fabric can then also be used for the groomsmens' ties and cumberbunds. Then all the clothes flatter everybody!

I'm not sure what boutiques or bridal salons you have frequented recently, but there are numerous bridal styles that are not strapless, i.e. t-strap, cap sleeve, three-quarter length, long sleeve, halter v-neck, etc.

Your wedding dress style should be based upon your body type, the formality of your wedding, personal style and your BUDGET!!

Also, don't be afraid to take a chance and simply try a style that you would not normally wear...you may be pleasantly surprised...

I do not normally wear strapless clothing period, but I recently purchased a Vera Wang strapless bridal gown; it is absolutely gorgeous! It is the first and last dress I tried...I knew it was the RIGHT dress once I looked in the mirror. If I had ruled out strapless altogether, I would still be on the hunt for the perfect dress...

In the end, it doesn't matter what other brides have on...they may wear strapless, because it suits them...and something else may suit you, so you really don't have a problem.

If you have tried all of your options, go get that custom dress made, but get prepared to shell out more money and numerous fittings in many cases...

Here's to looking beautiful on your wedding day!

I am getting married in September and I have started looking for gowns and bridesmaids dresses also. And it is hard to find a dress that has sleeves......but that is not everywhere. You have to shop around and go to different cities. But I asked the store clerk and she told me that strapless gowns are all you seeing now. And I agree with some of the comments.....it all depends on how comfortable the person is wearing it. Because my bridesmaids dresses are made strapless...but they come with straps. So they can wear them either or. And I have a plus size bridesmaids and she is comfortable with it. I prefer my wedding gown to have straps....but I would like them to be thick straps because I am blessed up top. And I personally would not feel comfortable wearing a strapless gown. And you most not forget....you get measured...so hopefully the dress will fit just right in the end. I tried to find something that the back was not all out...just b/c I am getting married in a church....but hey remember this is your day....so do what makes you happy...whether it be strapless or not.

Its all about preference and what the bride wants not anyone else. I agree that some women choose a dress that isnt flattering but its not really their fault, someone should've been honest with them an dsuggested another typr of dress. I know that i choose strapless even though I never thought I would like it on me. As far as custom made dresses go: that ha snothing to do with the dress being strapless or not. They could go to a seamstress and get a strapless just as easy as they can go to a store and buy one.

It is the style nowadays. There are a few dresses made that have straps but strapless is the trend. And YES it is WAY more expensive to have a custom made dress. And why are you so judgemental? Who are you to say the strapless dress doesnt look good on every bride you see? Are you the fashion police?

That is the style right now, but I see cap sleeves coming in again. I agree strapless wedding gowns are not for all figures and unfortunately some heavy girls wear strapless gowns showing off their giggly fat arms and they look rediculous. If someone buys a strapless gown, any dressmaker would make a cap sleeve or shrug for the bride if they wanted. But what can you do, most people are slaves to fashion to a point that they will wear something that is very unflattering even if their body type doesn't call for it.

Many women like the style. Others don't want to go through the hassle of finding one that's tailor made since so many stores only care the strapless variety. It may be "fairly easy if you know where to go," but how many of us know a seamstress? I know I don't.

My dress is strapless and I think it looks great on me. I think that its personal preference...I also think that when it comes time for dancing at the reception...its a lot easier to move around in a non-confining dress, plus it will be a lot cooler.

I personally don't like sleeves anyway...on dresses or shirts...that just me. Makes me wicked hot and uncomfortable.

I believe that brides have a certain style in mind that they have envisioned for their wedding day and they find dresses that fits that style. There is no one answer to why a specific bride chooses one style over another.
