My son just got his braces on yesterday and he has a metal plate on the roof of his mouth. His back teeth do not meet since the braces have been put on, therefore he cannot chew ANYTHING! Please give me some ideas on what to feed him.

Anything soft.
Noodles/soup, smoothies, ice cream, yogurt, etc. All of these require little to no chewing to swallow.

Before I got my braces, I had a special retainer that widened my jaw. My top molars were completely covered so I couldn't really chew. Plus, I was in pain.

So, I ate only soft foods like spaghetti-O's, jello, yogurt, meal replacement shakes, soup. Anything I could eat without chewing. Once I got use to the retainer, I added chicken to my diet since its pretty easy to chew.

When I got the retainer taken off and braces put on, I ate pretty much everything. I stayed away from anything sticky or too hard that could cause damage to the braces or gum them up.

You can also call the dentist's office, they will be able to let you know what foods are ok for him to eat.

No apples, pears, gum, now and laters, jaw breakers, jolly ranchers, cough drops, laffy taffy, salt water taffy, peanuts, corn nuts, cashews, etc.

Make sure he gets a Christmas tree brush from the dentist also. That helps a lot.

Other than the items above, just make sure nothing is too hard, as this can break brackets, or too sticky, as this can pull brackets off. He needs to clean his teeth good though. Because decalcification marks are not pretty when the braces come off if they aren't kept up well!

Generally, If you have braces you can eat anything that is not to hard or sharp for example its a good idea to stray away from chips nuts and things like that but since he cannot chew anything i would steer more towards Mashed Potatoes , Soups and things of that nature

if his braces are going to be on for some time to come, he should try to chew something. you cant make him live on soups all the time. let him try to chew something soft at first. he has to get used to eating with his braces.
ask your dentist what he can eat.

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen that problem before. My daughter's orthodontist gave me a kitchen magnet of no-nos for her and it's still up. It lists no: gum, sticky food such as caramels, starbursts and the like or hard foods such as nuts, popcorn, apples carrots, chips or pizza crusts.

If he can't chew at all, you can try soups...especially those that are blended like lentil or split pea.
