Wagner was a loony alright but for sheer temperament I would have to go with Beethoven (1770-1827).

Beethoven was obviously frustrated because he couldn't hear his own music, having gone deaf in 1802 (age 32). Additionally, he suffered bouts of sever abdominal pain from drinking wine that had been sweetened with lead (see "Beethoven's Hair"). I'm sure he was in a lot of pain much of the time. And if that's not enough, I think he had a phlegmatic personality that perhaps bordered on being bi-polar.

More modern is Stravinsky whose acerbic wit is well known.

Modest Mussorgsky was quite unpleasant. He had a very tortured soul, unstable, and was terribly addicted to alcohol (which eventually took his life).

Mahler. the man was VERY superstitcous, very demanding [his orchestral pieces have so many instruments] . he also blamed the death of his child on himself. he was also very scared to write the ninth symphony in d major because he was afraid he would die [mozart died after he wrote his ninth symphony] you can also hear his sufferage in his music. [[very depressing], like in the first symphony, third movement it is a funeral march. he also haad a really bad temper
