Chantek has a vocabulary of several hundred words, and understands both spoken English and American Sign Language. Chantek makes and uses tools, creates paintings, necklaces, crafts and music.
recently his weight ballooned to over 500 lbs., probably due to depression.
when asked what he was thinking about, he
replied;
"Oh, just food."

Perhaps the best answer is "no - he's not people, he's orang-utan" - i.e. rather than trying to make orangs human, recognise and respect them for what they are. Otherwise there is the danger of thinking that other species only have value in proportion to how human-like they are, which may be a mistake.

I've seen him and just can't believe that anyone could look
into his eyes and not think ,,,yes evolution is possible,
however that goes against the beliefs of some.
If you cannot entertain that idea you must really lack imagination.

"chantek" is derived from "cantik" which mean beautiful in malay (my native language).
"orangutan" is derived from "orang hutan" which mean "people of forest" in malay.
what is weird,why that male orangutan named "chantek" (beaufiful)? because it's girly name.
