Religion is a visceral issue. It is not just a viewpoint to those on all sides of the issue but a way of life. People can and have discussed what they believe and why all the time. What ends up happening though is that people feel they need to start defending what it is t hey base their entire lives on when they think other people are questioning that lifestyle.
Religion and Politics will usually be debated and not discussed.

Because religion, as with politics, goes to the core of who we are. Even if one claims to be athiest or agnostic. And if one perceives that a "discussion" is turning critical of their belief system then they get very defensive, and sometimes very agressive. And it can often be over what others might consider to be very trivial matters. Just look at the slaughter occuring now between Sunni and Shiite Muslims. Is there really so much difference in their religious phylosophies to warrant such mayhem. The Catholics and Protestants periodically find excuses to murder each other. That's why religion should only be "discussed" if the participants are wearing 16 ounce boxing gloves and protective head gear, and no sharp objects or explosive devices are in the immediate vicinity.

Actually, debate is a valid form of discussion. What's not valid is belittling the other position. Pointing out the deficiencies in another's position is quite valid.
If all you do is say I like this or that about your religion, but never discuss or debate the differences, all that's happening is a mutual admiration society. Being able to defend one's position in the face of seemingly contradictory positions is a spiritually beneficial exercise.

I am with you 100%. This is why I stay away from answering in the Religion and Spirituality section. People love to debate but do not discuss. And when this happens, it's a pointless matter.

because most people have different views of religion, and everyone wants to convert each other so they debate and try to sway the other person on their side. Most people cannot comprehend that other people are allowed to have a different view of religion thus making it impossible for them to discuss it like adults.

Discussing religion would be like watching one program on the history channel over and over again. It would get old and boring.Debating it on the other hand always leaves room for a new perspective or at least a good argument.

Debate is a nice word for having a cat fight. Its a cover up for arguing, being rude and basically making fools of ourselves.
Discussion is a MUCH better thing to do in my opp.

some people just don't understand the real heart of religion and take it as an excuse for violence... though religion is all about peace isn't it? They are all greedy people that want people to obey them and them only. I think that as long as you're not committing sins and being a good human, it doesn't really matter who you worship does it?
