I would like to replace a carpet in my bedroom using someone like Empire Carpet. What is an average cost?

I can't find anything online and I want to know before I have a guy come to my house and give me an estimate.

Also, what is an average of replacing your carpet with hardwood flooring?

This is what I charge to install that bedroom.
Carpet $9 per yard
12x12=144ft.=16yds. so about $150 labor.
A carpet that size can cost from $100-$500 dollars depending on the quality and style so the total should be under $700
Hardwood $2.50 per ft.
144 ft.= $350 labor.
There are plenty of great hardwoods out there for under $3 per ft. so materials can be had for under $500.
Total price, under $1000.
Keep in mind that these labor costs will go up for installation of tack strip for carpet, or baseboard/quarter round for hardwood. Also moving excessive furniture or tearing out old carpet will raise the price a little.

Don't use Empire. Too expensive, limited selection, poor business practices. Stay with your independent flooring and carpet stores. They will stock remants and do a much better job with installation. I agree with Kirsten a remnant is a good way to get best value for your carpet purchase. Doing one room will be a minium labor charge for the installer to come to you house. Figure around $175.00 for labor. Carpet and pad vary depending upon the quality that you choose. Carpet will range from $150.00 - $500. Padding will cost around $50.00 - $75.00. So you total for bedroom carpet will be approximately $375 - $750 complete. Ripping up your own carpet in 4' sections with a utility knife and removing the furniture will save you money.

Labor to install hardwood would be around $3.35/sq ft. Labor to install will be about $500. Materials will run you around $600, again depending on what you choose. You'll need at least 5 % waste and to purchase full cartons. You'll also need to install a new baseboard, remove and replace existing, or supply and install new quarter round to cover the expansion gap. So figure around $1100 for hardwood installed.

Good luck with your project.

I would suggest visiting a local home decorating or home improvement store, and ask to see their remnants. These are the leftovers after most of a carpet roll is used up and stores sell them very cheaply. I've carpeted two bedrooms about the size of yours or larger with remnants and spent $250 on one, $400 on the larger. When you buy, ask if the store will deliver. (They might not offer that service, but try it.) Then ask them to recommend a trusted local carpet installer, who will likely be a self-employed person that will not charge you like the carpet companies. The installer may even be willing to pick up the carpet on his way to your home if you don't have other transportation for it. Also compare costs between buying your own carpet padding, or having the installer provide it.
