I am an avid biker going on two years now. It's spring so I dragged out my partner in crime bike. As always the same thing happens. It was a good ride, only about 4 1/2 miles, which I completed in about 23 min.(yeah horrible timing I know, third day back at it) anyhow, did good got my heart rate up and was sweating. By the time I get home I am ravenously hungry. Will protein curb the hunger? I also noticed my endurance is far better if I bike within a few hours of waking up, why is that? Any suggestions? Thanks. : D

are you eating at least 1 hour before you ride? do you snack while on the bike? both are recommended to avoid the hunger issue...

also, for only 4.5 miles you shouldn't be hungry at all... it should start to hit once you pass 20 or 30 miles...

Yep I get the munchies too after a hard ride, not sure if it's some kind of hormone response to physical stress, or what. for me, the trick is to not overeat and un-do all the calories I just burned. I'll go with a tall glass of OJ for the sweet tooth, and some cashews/almonds/cheese to get the fat and salt craving under control.

Uncle Neal's right, a ride that short you're not really burning calories much, if you have the willpower try to wait a couple hours to use that post-exercise metabolism to burn more calories.

Eating a banana will help replace the potassium that you burned up on your ride . Potassium help,s keep you muscles from wearing out. Your muscles build up a chemical that breaks down some of the fibers in your muscles that's where banana,s help and you need protein as well after your ride to help with recovery. Try taking some energy bars with you and take breaks and snack while you rest you will fell better after your ride and get more out of your ride.

Yesterday I had nothing but corn flakes all day and rode 50 miles afterwards. I was so hungry I ate a pound and a half of corned beef when I got home.

You need to eat something BEFORE riding, and protein will help curb hunger well so eat a small handful of nuts.
